I have a 2001. 5 HO 6er with 22k. Do i need to go have it checked out soon or just keep on driving her. I curently get about 17mpg "4. 10 gears" and it seems to run fine. What do you think?????

depends

Not much to tune up. . nothing really. As long as you stay on top of the fluid and filter changes, chassis lube, etc... there's nothing else you really need to (or can) do. Kinda nice, huh?

I think it would be a good idea to change the plugs, coil, and wires at about 30,000 miles. There is also something in the engine that needs to be tightened because it rattles all the time and smells funny.

Change the fuel filter, if you haven't already. Some people believe frequent changes contribute to longer lift pump life. I recently switched to 10k changes instead of 15k changes for that reason, and because it's easier to remember. Dodge gets about $45 for the part; they are <$15 from Geno's, or your local Cummins or Fleetguard supplier. Often local distributors don't know the right part number; my 2001 uses the FS19579 (Cummins Part No 3945213). This is the top of the line StrataPore - don't let them drag you into one of those "this fits too and is just as good" type conversations. Difficulty of the change would be on a par with changing one spark plug on a gasser. In other words, do it yourself, just be careful not to cross-thread the lid. Slap in a new air filter while you're under the hood.

All just IMHO, of course.

I change my oil/filter every 3750mi,the fuel filter every 9k mi and the air filter every 10k mi. I tend to do take a lot of trips towing our 5er and the majority of other miles is short 5 mile trips to and from work.

geeeees. . I guess that my 71 mile drive to work is just about right for a full warm up and coffee input. . that is why I put on a extra fuel tank... I get about 1300/1400 miles before fueling that's about two weeks... or about two pounds of fresh coffee beans a fuel load. . LOL

I would check all the exhaust manifold bolts for tightness, and all intake connections for tightness also. If these connections get loose they always show on gauges, but also show themselves with low power, and bad MPG. These connections have a tendancy to loosen up, also if you can check your lift pump for what preesure it is putting out at idle, a healthy lift pump will put out atleast 13-14PSI at idle.

My $. 02 for checking stuff when running without gauges.

P. S. Gauges are a good engine moniter, they help tell you what your engine is telling you. High EGT, Low Boost, Low Fuel pressure, etc.

Do a search for gauges and you'll come up with a lot of different ways, and opinions for waht gauges, and how, and where to put them.

WILLYSLOVER - I had a 67 mile commute one way for 2-1/2 yrs. Enjoyable drive isn't it. I've had only a 57 Mi. one-way commute for the last 2 yrs now. I've been luck both commutes were mostly on divided 4-lane with little city driving. I really liked it when it snowed heavy. Traffic would thin out and it would add maybe 10-15 minutes to the drive. I drive into a MUCH more populated area now and when the roads get REALLY bad I head OFF the expressways onto the surface roads. Had a real bad sleet storm last Feb. or March. Dove off the "I" and missed being involved in an 8 car pile-up 10 miles down the road. :)

I want to but this truck when you're done with it!!!

So much advice, so many forgotten items.

Never forget the O2 sensor, and the plug wires should be replaced at the same time that the plugs are changed. Don't forget the regular application of Catcon grease to the inlet area of the manafulator bearings at the top of the grimmage manifold.

tappets

Cummins recommends checking tappets at 24,000 miles and every 48,000 after that. You might want to do that if you have some idle time, my truck hasn't been sitting long enough to ever have them checked. I know some bus fleet operators that never have checked them on the b series Cummins and they have alot of them hauling kids all over the country.

So go tune it.
