As my truck is starting to get ready for new tires I am looking to see what might be new aside from the stock Ameritrac tires or the goodyear tires. I e-mailed Michelin and the told me they have a tire in this size LTX M/S. Has anyone heard of or used this tire in this size? In the past I have been happy with Michelin tires.

Thanks--Greg

I just purchased a set of Mastercraft Courser HTR's (made by Cooper). Right at $1,000 for all 6 mounted & balanced. 60K treadlife warranty.

I have bought several sets for prior owned trucks in the 16" size and received excellent results. When it's time to replace the OEM Goodyears, a set of the Michelin LT235/80R17E LTX/MS tires will go on my heavily loaded dually. :D

I went to the Michelin web site and put this size in and no match. I e-mailed Michelin and was told they do make the tire you list above.

Has anyone used this Michelin tire? If so what kind of milage and ride did it give?

Thanks to all who have responded so far.

My truck came with the Michelins. The ride and handling characteristic is great on dry pavement only. One down side is that they pick up every piece of gravel you run over and sling it. I've gone down several gravel roads only to hear rapid fire Ka-Ting's as the stones where hitting the truck sides. Another down side is thier inability to get traction on wet grass or in mudd. I got stuck in my own front yard. Even airing down the tires didn't help. The grass and mud was packed solidly into the tire tread.

My first gen with Douglas (el-cheapo) tires pulled it out easily. I won't buy Michelins again.

I know this thread has been a little dormant for a while, but it is time for some new tires. Right now there are about 6 choices that I have found that have the 235/80/17 size to them. What are your picks? and do you know of any other tires that would make a good swap out for a 2wd Dually that is used for heavy hauling? Right now new wheels are not in the budget, so I am having to stay in the stocker size range.

Here are the ones I found:

Firestone Transforce HT

Firestone Transforce AT

General Ameritrac

General Ameritrac TR

Goodyear SR-A

Goodyear GS-A

Michelin LTX M/S

Thanks in advance for your input.

I'm getting the Firestone Transforce HT's as we speak. The garage is taking their time, but anyway; I'll let you know my first impressions.

Thank you CHolman..... Driver just called so, I am gonna have to order today. I hope the Transforces are good one. My only issue at this point is getting the H/Ts or the A/Ts..... Anyone got input. This is for my hotshot rig that runs up north quite a bit. Need some good snow traction, without sacrifices to much on treadlife.

GFritsch, appreciate the website info. The info there is very good. Right now I am just hoping for some more input from those on here that have purchased them for a like vehicle for comparison... . Darn time constraints.

Darn. Called everywhere. Everything is 6 week backorder or so on the Transforces, so I had to go with the Michelin LTX M/S tires. They were all that I trusted of the in-stock tires. I will come back and post how well they do for us. Thanks again everyone.

TireRack - (4) LT235/80RR-17 Michelin LTX M/S E In Stock $174. 00 each $696. 00 set of 4. Only replacing the drives at the moment. The steer axles still have plenty of tread left.

Cooper has a couple you might want to look at. I got the off name tire made by Cooper, it is Mastercraft. I got 6 of the Mastercraft Courser HTR for $1,000 out the door include mounting and balancing. They have a 60,000 mile tread life warranty.

Here is Cooper's website, you can also get to the Mastercraft website from the Cooper website by going to the bottom of the home page and click on "Other Brands":

Cooper Tires

They also offer a mud & snow in ST series. They also have tires for our trucks in the ATR and HT series.

Hope this helps.

I just order 6 Michelins this week. I was also told by one place I called that Toyo has a tire in this size now. I think there is also an aggressive Cooper available that guys in the oil patch are using. I will be glad to finally get out of these (NOT) Good for a Years. . I was really pleased with the Michelins on the old 94.

Well, need some help here... my '03 slt swb srw qc ho 6sd anti 3. 73 came with 265 70r 17... many here are showing a 235 xx 17. Did i miss read?

Eric

The 235/80/17s are what come on the dually trucks and certain srw did if ordered that way. Your SRW comes with the wider tread (265 instead of 235) since clearence between duals is not a factor.

I have ran three sets of Michelin LTX till they were bald on my work trucks. They lasted a minimum of 60,000 miles in very tought conditions.

My Chevy 03 3500 cargo has 65,000 miles on it and I'm going to run the tires for another 10,000 miles.

IMO Michelin is the best tire you can buy.

I would still like to find a slightly taller tire for the stock wheel. Anyone have any luck in that regard?? I have the 235/80R/17 now.

BTW - Ended up blowing a couple tires on the trailer while coming into Memphis. Pulled into a tire place to get those repaired and low and behold they had the Firestone Transforce H/Ts to fit my truck in stock. Got 4 of them (guess no one thinks about those of us with 6 wheels  ) Anyways... I am taking the Michilens back this time around and will see how these Firestone's hold up. Hopefully they will be good and if not, then I know where to get some Michilens at now. Also for those wondering, road noise has greatly decreased and the ride is a lot more pleasant than with the Generals that came on it. As we get a couple more miles on them I will report back some more.
