Hey everyone ,

I've been lurking for a few weeks and decided to join you guys. Good old Dockboy told me this is where I need to be since I'm doing a Cummins swap on my 02 Powerstroke.

The question I have is what are the differences between these motors, is it just in the programming or is it hard parts also? I can save about 1000. 00 buying the 235hp motor. Someone told me there may be some differences in the piston cooling jets from the SO to the HO motors. I am looking to make around 550-600hp initially. What should I do to achieve this? I was thinking:

1) Helix Cam

2) F1 Injectors

3) B1 turbo

4) TST/Smarty stack

5) Studs

6) Cp3

Am I on the right track? Do I need to do the cp3 right away?

Thanks

I'm guessing here, but the 235HP wasn't a CRD was it... the 250HP was the cali-model CRD in 03, and the 305 HP CRD was the 49-state engine...

Basically, the 235HP is the "older" (98. 5-02) design with the VP44 IP, and the others are CRDs with the CP3 IP.

I think this is right anyway... again, educated guess.

Difference between 235 and 250 is emissions equipment, 305 has hollowed out pistons and oil jets that blow oil up into them from below to help cool the piston, there may be other physical differences, I'd have to look it up to tell you for sure. Programming probably different for all three.

Wasn't there a 235HP 2nd gen CTD, 250HP 2nd gen CTD, 250HP 3rd gen CTD, and the 305HP 3rd gen CTD???

I thought the 250HP/305HP 3rd gens were both CRDs, the difference being emissions for cali??

They dropped the 250HP when the 325HP (600CTD) came out because it was 50 state legal, right??

I guess I'm just trying to prevent him from buying a 2nd gen thinking it was a 3rd gen...

Hey John Cooper!

I have an o4 so cali 235. Mine is still stock and was just wondering how your mods are working out. What would you suggest? I pull a 10k 5er also.

So it seems that the only differences are in the pistons and their cooling jets?

So which motor should I get if I'm looking for 600hp on fuel alone, is the difference in these motors worth spending an additional 1000. 00 for the 305 HO over the 235 SO?

If you're trying to get 550-600, I'd start with an HO. Your probably going to spend the extra $1000 somewhere along the way, anyway, to make up for the 70 hp difference. With the HO, you may not need the CP3. With the 235, you probably will.
