CAT Turbo Question

oh this could be fun

The 24v 8. 3 Cummins on the drill rig quit, the electronic readout was saying "CAN BUS FAILURE". Ended up jiggling some wires and wa-la, it started! The apparent culprit was some wires coming out of the loom with a 5amp blade fuse then going back into the loom. After wiring in a new fuse holder, it works now. The engine looks just like a 24v 5. 9 in the Dodges, just bigger. Has anyone had this problem, and what is the CAN BUS, in case it happens again? Side note, the factory Cummins lift pump on this engine seems to be a real reliable workhorse, possible replacement for 24v's in pickups?

the can bus is the whole data connection between the engine ecm and what ever is attached/connected to it. current standard on it is j1939 i believe [kinda like obd2 in automotive]
