I just did a valve ajustment as outlined in issue 30 of the TDR today. Easy to do, but probably a waste of time. I have 35,000 miles on my 99 and all the valves were within tolerances. A couple were at the high end of acceptable though so I went through and reset them to . 010 intake and . 020 exaust as the article said. I didn't take time to go for a drive so I'll see tomorrow if it made any difference.

Do your self a favor next time and do them this way. I have seen the TDR staff repeatedly come up with short cuts and strange methods to say the least on valve adjustment. The diesel production industries dont use short cuts and old wives tales to adjust valves. They do it the way I am going to describe to you. Believe me, if these short cuts worked reliably and consistently places like Detroit Diesel, CAT, Cummins and all the other big engine producers would have been doing it 20 years ago on the production line.

Get a good quality dial indicator unless you are real good with feeler gages. . hence the "feel" in its name. With the dial indicator you *see* what the lash is. After you adjust one, give it a "wiggle" with the indicator still hooked up to insure you're getting a true reading after it settles and moves a bit. Here is the #1 most important rule: only turn the engine the way its supposed to turn. If you go past your adjusting point, dont back the engine up! Repeat, DO NOT BACK THE ENGINE UP. Just keep going around until you find your spot again. There is play/lash in everything and you can screw up the valve timing by adjusting the valves without getting all the lash out of the valvetrane, which is exactly what happens when you turn the engine the opposite direction it normally rotates.

Hope this helps.

I had a few emails with questions on how to do this, so here is what I sent them.

Back all the adjustment nuts off on all rockers, then run them down with
your fingers until they touch (you will only be able to run down the rockers
with no tension on them... the ones with tension will have to wait their turn
on the next round when you rotate the engine 360 degrees. Zero the gage out
and adjust for ever how many mm or whatever measurement you want to use.

1. Put cyl #1 on TDC by using the TDC mark behind the crank case breather
on the front of the engine. You will have to remove the breather... I
believe it unscrews. You will see "TDC" stamped at 12 o'clock inside the
case and a mark on the fuel pump timing gear. Put that mark on the 12
o'clock TDC position.

2. Remove the valve cover, and mark the following INTAKE valves with a
paint marker, 1,2,4.

3. Now mark EXHAUST valves 1,3,5. with the paint marker. You should have 6
rockers marked now.

4. Adjust the INTAKE valves somewhere between . 15mm and . 38mm. , I shoot for
the middle of the road . 25mm.

5. Adjust the EXHAUST valves now between . 38mm and . 76mm. , again I shoot
for middle of the road about . 57mm.

6. Give all the rockers a good wiggle before removing the gage to make sure
all the play is out of them.

NOW ROLL THE ENGINE OVER 360 DEGREES AND ADJUST THE 6 ROCKERS NOT PAINTED
WITH A DOT.

Put it all back together, your done.

Far-out advice Chad. Thanks for the tip for I have printed your instructions and will file them out in the shop until needed. I take it your dial indicator is a magnetic base type. Dave

No particular reason Mr B, Just something to do!

I popped off the valve cover and checked the valve lash when it had 25k miles... waste of time! I'll check it again in another 100k or so.
