24-Valve Chrome Valve Cover Source

My buddy is looking for a source for a chrome valve cover for his truck. I know I've seen a couple of members on here that have them. Any info would be appreciated...

AFAIK there aren't any "available" out there. A couple of us have spent the time (and I do mean TIME) necessary to polish ours and I know at least one guy polished his up to smooth it out and then sent it to a chrome shop to be chromed. Mine took me about 60 hours to get to look like this. Here's a couple pictures of mine:

Yep, like with Steve's case, every chrome or polished 24v Valve Cover you see has many hard hours of smoothing and polishing behind it.



The most awesome one of all is John Treibel's chrome plated piece. If anyone has a pic handy, that one's worth posting.

Did the same thing with my '96. All by hand. Maybe I shoulda bought a Dremel but was almost done before I got that bright idea. Looks great. Don't much care if I ever see another jar of Mother's Mag & Aluminum Polish again.

You would think that someone out there knows of someone that knows how to chrome these up. Think of all the $ to be made. Doesnt someone know of someone that owns a business that does this... ... ... ..... someone... ... ... . anyone? Don

I have very good in's with a large plating company in Kent WA, I would need a couple of valve covers to get the ball rolling.

Chroming I wouldn't do. GOD FORBID the inside part of the cover's chrome starts to flake off. (5,000 dollar + oops)

Thanks for the info guys. I'm let him know about the polishing method but I think he's not going to be to happy about it since he spent a significant amount of time polishing his intake manifold on his street rod and didn't seem to want to go down that route again Steve, that looks nice want to do mine on my 12 valve

The problem with chroming a aluminum valve cover is not many places have the ability or the proper chemicals to do the job correctly. I have a gentleman who has looked over my extra set of 12 valve stuff recently to try to determine if they could be done in his shop and his answer was this...



"Yes,I can do them,but,how long they would last is another story. If the aluminum is not properly prepped and cleaned all it will do is end up bubbling up the chrome. Keep in mind how porous aluminum is and how many minuscule particles of dirt become trapped and how hard it is to prep. Not many people want to spend the amount of money it would take us to prep the material to chrome which is where most of the incurred cost would be. I could anodize alot more parts for the same cost for the owner than chroming one piece like that. "



I have seen what happens to the Cummins set for the 12 valve after a long winter here in PA with chemical salt. Once that crap gets sprayed on it what a mess to keep nice forever,rust constantly popping up. Polishing or anodizing is the deal and would provide a longer lasting look... ... ... Andy

I know where one of those limited Red valve covers are at and could be bought now. We have determined its possessed and Proram has removed it,LOL,its bad luck. It was on Kobi's truck and it had a transmission explosion and turbo kaboom. Its was on Scotts truck and caused 2 head-gasket explosion's so its OFF for good and going to either be gotten rid of or melted down ... . Andy

so thaaaaaats what was wrong with my truck. Maybe for the multiple turbos that went, but the most recent natural disaster with the transmission, was with his silver cover on mine. Maybe I need to put the factory black one back on. Never had any problems when it was installed.
