Prefilter Care?

just a heads up, the valve cover that I've seen have all been made out of magnesium. check the stamp inside.

magnesium is much harder to chemtreat vs. aluminum

FYI

this valve cover is the real deal must weigh in at close to 7 - 8 lbs of pure aluminum.

and the cost ismuch nicer too. suppose to rain like an sob tomorrow :(

Torque I hope to meet you guys in person :D

That is only a mere drop in the bucket as to what my Cummins ("red") valve cover cost to chrome plate by the top plating shop in the Northwest! Add to that a custom machined billet aluminum oil fill cap cover and the 5 "large style" (i. e. , '98. 5/'99) hold down bolts... and that was with my labor decking the top of the valve cover and smoothing/detailing the lower "clamp" periphery prior to submission to the chrome plating shop.

Decking the top of the valve cover was decided upon to give the cast aluminum valve cover that billet look. A single point fly cutter was utilized as the best means to impart as little deflection to the top of the valve cover surface as possible. This was important because I knew that once I had it chrome plated it would look like a mirror and it had to be dead flat or it would look warped, definitely detracting from the look I was after. After the fly cutting operation, I followed up with a random orbital sander to blend the freshly decked surface to the periphery of the oil fill boss and rear angled section of the top of the valve cover.

Once everything was back from the plating shop, I tightened each of the five hold down bolts equally and sequentially, using a precision straight edge to double check deflection of the surface. I was ultimately pleased with the results.

Vaughn, thanks for posting that pic of my engine compartment on page 2 of this thread... and for the kind words. :)

Bob, I want to see your new valve cover for myself... it looks nice. Is it done in CermaChrome? If so, that's the same process that Dave Perea had applied to his ATS exhaust manifold.

John, The valve cover is not done in cerachrome. It's a silver metallic powder coat. no polishing required ;)

I take your advice to the heart

Check this one out

I saved this picture from another thread because I thought it looked so good. This is the best looking engine compartment that I've ever seen. I believe it belongs to RADodge or something like that - give him all the credit for this.

Bob,

That silver one looks VERY sharp!

Wasn't Jason Burton making some at one point? Something along the lines of the one below in the pic? I remember these were my favorite!!!

Andrew

yes, jason made that cover. There are not many member with pockets as deep as mom's though

jason does all custom work

Hey Bob,

I have a suggestion that might add to the functionality and demand for your valve cover. Many owners who have the by-pass filter systems have a hard time deciding where they want to install their return line from the filter. Some alter the oil filler cap to accept the line. Some remove the OEM filter and install an adapter but many prefer to keep the OEM filter.

How about drilling and tapping the covers for a bypass filter return line before they are powder coated. The hole could be on the passenger side of the cover next to the oil filler cap so the flow could be monitored. A threaded stainless steel plug could be used to seal the hole until the owner decides if he wants to use it. Just a thought.

Also, a billet aluminum filler cap would be nice. Oo.

Good luck with your project

So, where does one come up with a valve cover that says, "100%PURE WHOOP ASS" ? Bob are you able to make these? I had a link a long time ago to someone in the NW but never got a reply back. It supposedly was to someone who was making that valve cover. Any ideas? I would buy one with that on it. Looks SHARP !
