While I can’t say which engines will work. I know I had some issues with my 01 that had to do with the cam position sensor and while I was researching and found that the 01 did not have a crank sensor but just the cam sensor and iirc it is the same part number just sits in a different location up front instead the crank sensor in the rear. All that being said I do not remember which year it changed

I seem to remember you have to change something to make a newer engine work but I don’t know what . Hopefully Someone will know

If you just want a drop in, you’ll have to go with a ‘98 or ‘99. As Barry said, ‘00-‘02 only used the cam sensor and didn’t have the tone wheel on the crank. The hole is there in the block for the sensor, but without the tone wheel on the crank you can’t just add a sensor.

Cummins I believe either took the tone ring out of the 53 or the whole crank. So I understand all of those cranks have the threaded holes to mount the tone ring. Cummins did not realize there was no tone ring until the engine was re-installed and they kept getting a check engine light so they did the replacement twice.
