Help! Dodge Cummins in boat

I'm stumped

It surprises me that DC has repaired these engines under warranty. I don't remember the year it was, but it doesn't seem all that long after I bought my 92, that Dodge came out with a letter on this subject. I received one, it stated that they have had engines damaged from using filters other then Mopar and that my engine warranty would be voided, if filters other then a Mopar, were used.
This is basically what they said, so I used Mopar filters from then on, for at least the warranty period.

It is amazing that the engine was fixed under warranty; the Service Manager at the DC shop I used to go to saw a Fram oil filter on my truck and told me to get rid of it immediately. In fact, when I went inside to buy a replacement, he gave me the Mopar filter at no charge. He said the same thing about the Fram's filter paper coming apart and clogging the oil injectors that spray on the cylinder walls. He said if the Fram filter was found to be the problem it would not be a warranty repair.

Good advice.

Good advice and good service should be acknowledged; the DC shop was Manuel Dodge in Richardson, Texas.

I've been using Baldwin (B339)and questioned the high oil pressure readings with the owner from which I purchase. According to him, if the Baldwin oil filter fails, Baldwin will stand behind the repair/replacement of the engine.

Thus far ('99 with 10K) and 3 oil/filter changes I haven't noticed any abnormalities in the filter. No leaks, no oil added between changes and the filter shape is normal after removal. Plan to send in an oil sample on the next change just to see how things are "breaking in".

I wouldn't use a Fram filter on my lawn mover if you gave them to me.

I beleve Baldwin is good, but when the Cummins filters (fleetguard) are so cheep through Gino's, why bother taking a chance?

I really enjoy being in the country, here in SW Missouri but it's sure been cold!!!! We got about 16 inches of snow a few weeks ago and it's been below freezing ever since!!! The block heater really makes a difference in starting and warm up!!! I'm glad to report that Joplin, MO, about 20mi SE of me has a big Cummins dealer and that's where I buy my Cummins approved oil and fuel filters and my premium blue 2000 oil. 50,000 miles on my truck and absolutely no problems and it uses no oil at all! Don't ever use cheap oil or filters!!! Take care, Sam

Ed the Amsoil filters have no problems with cold temps as I have driven in -10 degress below zero temps with the Amsoil filter (SDF-80) and my filter has not exploded yet and with you being in California you will be alright.

I have owned a 95, 97, 99, and 01 Dodge cummins. I have used nothing but Wix filters on my trucks. I discovered just today that the fuel filter sold by Wix is made by Fleetgaurd... not sure about the oil filter but it looks identical to the much higher priced Mopar filter that came on my trucks. My Oil filter costs about $7. 00 and my fuel filter is just under $15. 00. I have never had any kind of problem with the Wix filters and I know lots of people who use them on the Cummins engines. They are not as cheap as the Fram puke P. O. S. filers but they are reasonably priced filters that do an excellent job of protecting the investment that I have in my truck.

See TDR Issue #11,Winter 1996 p. 79. "Wix 51604, NAPA 1604, Big A 92604 or Carquest 8564 can possibly break down, clog piston cooling nozzle, and ruin your engine". These were recalled filters. I doubt if any of these filters are still on the shelf, but they caused problems, & make sure they don't wind up on your truck.
