Problem went away for a whole week while running around empty. I thought the problem was fixed with the comp turned off and then hooked up to a horse trailer with one horse this weekend and problem came back after 45 minutes of freeway speeds at 60mph.

similar problem

i think i am having a problem similar to yours. when i came back from a trip this week on the interstate (1700 miles worth) i noticed that when i did not have the cruise on, and i slowed down to 1500 rpms in 6th gear, i would loose my throttle response. this did not happen all the time, about 5 times over the 1700 miles. i could put the throttle all the way to the floor and nothing would happen. i also would not hear the turbo at all. i would down shift to 5th gear, the rpms would go up and the problem was gone. i too would really like to get this problem fixed. i checked my lift pump pressure about two months ago and it was at 13. 5psi. i guess i will check it again. any help is appreciated. thanks

I'm still having the this problem with my truck for about a month now. I rented the obdII from autozone so I can clear the codes. I get a 216 code, which if I'm right is the dreaded code for the vp44. I still have 13lbs. of fuel pressure driving down the road. It does not drop below 12. 8. Can my vp go bad even if the lift pumps not bad? I just replaced both pumps last year. I don't really want to take to dodge $$$. Any HELP?

I'm kinda new at this. My last one was a '90 250 Cummins. Absolutely the most bullet proof truck I've ever had. Over 450,000 miles and nothing I couldn't handle. The water pump went over 400,000 miles. The brakes front-over 300 and the rears-over 350. All original front suspension and original clutch in front of the 5spd. Valve adjust every 50-80,000 or soand no problems. I got spoiled big time, so I got a '99 figuring we'd be in tall cotton again. Wrong!Helluva nice truck though. Just a bit touchy with all this electronic garbage on it.

Now then what is the OBD-2 software and where can I get it? Because I'm going to figure this thing out if its the last thing I do. It does get a heap of frustrating though.

I'll Keep you posted as to my progress. And thank you all for the suggestions. This weekend I'll start on them.

Frustrating is the key word with all of this electrical garbage... I have been chasing a code problem between my APPS and AC Clutch engaging for over 2 months and $650. 00 cannot find the source of the problem... giving up and taking it to the dealership this week!!

Truck is at the dealer. Waiting for the dreaded news. Hope this does'nt take the whole tax return I wanted to buy 100hp injectors at diesel days. I really think I got a good mechanic who knows what he is doing. Hope he can find the answer.

Could be the APPS. Mine was doing it so I did the APPS reset procedure already mentioned. In the end a new VP44 and lift pump seems to have done the trick on my truck.

Had very problem, (actually still may have it). Found that when the defueling/loss of power occurs that if I push in on the clutch at speed and let RPM's go down to 900 then release clutch it clears up till it happens again. Use to be intermitant, on Monday it would happen almost repeatedly. I have the Superchips Tuner and was set at Level 1 (TOW). I programed back in my original factory settings, and started the truck to make sure everything was ok. Then I reprogrammed with Level 2 (Perf Tow) and have been ok now for a day and half. So it could be a software thing.

Ill tell ya, I have been having one of these wierd problems and it seems to be getting more and more frequent. I will be going along in 6th gear and slow down to around 1500 rpms. All of the sudden I start to loose power. I can put the pedal all the way to the floor and no response what so ever, it just keeps slowing down. I will then shift to 5th, which brings the rpms back to around 2000 and the problem goes away. I shift back to 6th and off I go. This happens loaded and empty, it makes no difference. I used to happen every week or so, and now it is starting to happen every other day or so. I do not have any aftermarket modifications to my engine. It is bone stock. If anyone has any ideas, I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks :{ :(

This has happened to me as well and i think i have the solution. pull the connectors for the fueling box and clean with electrical cleaner (crc makes some) then apply some di-electric grease (crc as well) to the plugs. cleared this problem up for me... ... this stuff is really sensitive to moisture from what i can tell.

BEST PRICE

vp44 gone now I need to know where the cheapest price is to get a replacement. Dodge wants 2,400. I have only had this pump on for a year and a half. Dodge did the vp and lift pump at the same time as well as the filter changes at the recommended intervals. They still wont warranty the pump.

Ended up buying new vp at discounted $1600 from liberty dodge in Hanford, Ca. Great guys willing to do their part in helping the customer. On the other hand the dealer (Fireside dodge Modesto, CA) who did the replacement vp, lp, fuel filter changes and transmission replacement a year and half ago would not do anything but replace the pump at $2,200 out of my pocket. He said that was his best price. The district manager for the area covering both dealers said he can not do anything for me because I am 6 months out of warranty, and the maintenance done at Fireside in Modesto, CA to change fuel filters at the recommended intervals did not matter dodge would not warranty the pump at all. I have never seen worse service from a service manager than what i recieved in Modesto. He could have cared less that I spent $5,000 18 months ago at his dealership. My business with them is done. He did not have much to say after I gave him my . 02 and told him I would contact consumer affairs since he would not even try to help me as much as a dealer 3 hours south and who I never dealt with before. Doing business with Liberty Dodge was very professional, I was pleased with the service from the service manager. I was still a little irrate that dodge would not warranty the pump. I mean a injector pump gone at 23,000 miles with still good fuel pressure. The gauge never showed under 10 lbs. at any time. Any way I'm on the third injection pump and now run stanadyne hoping that maybe a little more lubricity will help the injection pump. I also had to unhook the comp to get any warranty at all on my new pump. The mechanic was trying to blame the comp which rarely get used for the death of my barely used vp. I told him thousands of trucks were running them with little problems when used right. My opinion is I got a faulty pump and the district manager or Fireside should have stood behind their product and coughed up a pump to be fair and ensure the customer is satisfied. After all they would probably like me to continue servicing my vehicle through them right and possibly purchase another vechicle in the future. I wont set foot on that dealership again with that type of treatment. But in a year its gonna be bombed. with that amount of money now i could have been p-pumped. LIBERTY DODGE is the place to go if you must.

do you all know if the vp44 is covered under the 5yr 100k mile warranty. if my problem is the vp44, i am wondering if it will be covered under the engine warranty. my truck is a 2002 with 62k on it.

problem got pretty bad the other day. i would have the cruise set at 65mph. all of the sudden the truck would just start slowing down for no reason, sometimes you could feel it kick back in, and it would take off by itself, other times, i would have to push in on the clutch, wait a while, and then it would be ok. was doing it a lot, and i am hoping if it is the vp44, it will be warranty. thanks :{

Had a similar experience last year with my '01,the truck was driving fine and just like that it had no throttle anymore till it died on the road. I cranked it over and over and it wouldn't fire. I then left it go for a while and came back to see what else I could check and then I went to start it and it eventually fired up after a rough start. So I drove it home and it shut off again with a puff of white smoke before I got into my driveway. (Yeah, my check engine light was on) Well I messed around for a bit and pulled my Edge EZ and found out it went postal on me and sent it back and got a new one,truck runs great again,check engine light out.
