Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 24 valve service without ever using a fuel additive?

Just wondering?? Cummins does not recommend a fuel additive for our CTD engines. How many miles do members have on their 24 valve trucks without using any fuel additive? Has this caused any problems?

120K on mine with very sporadic use of additive, probably less than 10% of the time it runs treated fuel.

My father in-laws truck has 158K with no fuel additive, on rotella 15w-40 with fram filters even! No lift pump failures (as far as i know, he's never tested it) The only thing ever went wrong was a vacuum pump crack. Its had an EZ chip in it for pobably 120K of those 158K. Runs like a champ. Its and early 2000 model (He drives a lot) his 2002 duramax already has 40 something K on it.

I have run less than 2 gallons in 128K on mine. Running like a champ and only one lift pump replaced so far!

Additives

99QC4WD 130k On my 1st 100k used different additives about every third tank. At 100k started using MMO at every fill up. (Oh yeah I forgot to say I am on my third lift pump. ) About 6k ago my fuel pressure guage indicated that I had a problem of some sort. First I changed out guage with no change. Then I changed fuel filter (a little water in bottom of cannister. ) still no change. So I ordered up a new lift pump but before I changed it out I spotted a fuel additive in a local parts house and gave it a double dose. After about 50 miles guage quit behaving iradically and that was about 7k ago. Brand name of additive is McKay Premium Diesel Fuel Additive. and now I am using it regularly according to instructions on bottle. About $7. 00 a bottle. Also noticed about a 1psi increase in pressure. 16@idle, 15 @ cruise and 12 @ WOT My truck is completly stock except for air filter.

My neighbor thinks I;am nuts he has a 98 24 valve like mine . He useses fram filters and any oil that is on sale has 212000 miles on it goes out west every winter. Has never changed trans oil, or diff. fluids,Go figure, I offered to check his fuel preasure he just laughed.

I saw a post with a comment Piers supposedly made to the effect that he can tell on the 12v injection pumps which ones were run with additives due to less plunger wear. Just a rumor though, it would be interesting to substantiate it.

stseeber, I assume you started leaving out the MMO when you went with the other additive.

Are we seeing a connection Here?

Others have reported failing fuel level senders while using MMO that repaired themselves when MMO use was discontinued.

I personally have used a variety of additives since mile 1, so I can't add much to your thread.



However... Mr. HVAC I do believe does not use additives at all on his Rocket. Of course I do not know how many miles he has on it... . perhaps he will respond here himself.

When I had

my injectors upgraded the old one were kinda dirty they had a varnished dark brown look. I've been using power service or duraults additive since new. 36k and still have the lift pump. I try to fill up at 1/2 tank to make a little less work for the lift pump. I'll be looking for something else to use the McKays sounds good.

Don't you just hate those kind of people? It's the same kind of guy that can stuff his face day in/day out and still stay skinny as a rail



I'm one of those guys that has my fuel sender go south when using MMO. I also had it go south using PS but it took MANY more tanks of PS before it went beserk. Now I've pretty much stopped buying anything for the fuel.

Fuel level gauge went south but that was back before it was even broke in (less than 10k).

I'm kinda addicted to using DFA. I used Shell Rotella DFA in my truck since new and I also used it in my 2000. I don't know if it makes a difference but it makes me feel better that everything is nice and clean and some extra lubrication is happening. I know a lot of members never use a DFA and have hundreds of thousands of miles on their trucks with no problem. Maybe I can kick this habit, if it really doesn't help my truck.

129,000 and sporadic use

of DS - maybe a gallon at the most. I don't see any difference in mileage or such. Fuel filter is always clean, My dealer, who the tech is great, changed my lift pump under warranty at 97,000 even though it had adequate pressure. Did it because I had "driveability issues. " I kind'a think the fuel additives are like the old oil additive - and fishing lures - just to attract us suckers. I'm not sure they really do anything - but just try and convince any of us that they don't work. We have good luck using one and swear by it but we don't have anyway of knowing for ourselves if NOT using then would make any difference.

Based on all of the posts I have read I think you are right.
