24psi boost stock??

I think this has been rather beat in the past but thought I would ask. Just hooked up gauges this past weekend. I am hitting 23-24 psi at WOT unloaded. I was not expecting much more than 20. EGTs will not get over 900 °F pre turbo. Truck is an 2001. 5 auto, the VP44 died at 95K, have 125K on it now.

Does this sound possible or might the gauge be suspect? I can bring the truck in to work and test the gauge, but if it's not unheard of I won't worry about it.

Thanks!

Doesn't a stock truck defuel at 22 lbs boost. SNOKING

Just for info:

I'm stock, except for an AFE air filter, and just put on guages. I get 20psi max, not sure if it defuels, or that is the wastegate, but it won't go more than 20psi. This is at WOT, and pulling a large hill empty, my EGT's will get up to 1100.

Thanks for the info everyone. I took it out for another test beat last night. It will hold hold 23 psi at WOT without a problem. It did not apear to be de-fueling. EGT's did get over 900 °F going up the one hill on my way to work.

Hmmm, guess I should look into testing to gauge. Thanks again!

My truck is stock too and it hits 24-25 psi boost. I also switched all of my gauges this spring and I git the same 24-25psi. The gauges were made from different companies so I don't think it was a mistake. I never get above 1000 degrees on my EGT either and that includes my towwing my gooseneck up grades at WOT.

You have a 2001. 5 auto which should have had an HY35, 9CM housing just like my 2002. I never got over 18-20 psi stock until I "hooked" the waitgate. 23-24 seems high for stock. You should have defueled before then, I would think, unless you have a defueling module. Your signature dosent say. My 1st guess is that your guage may not be accurate if you are bone stock without a "hooked" waistgate or module.

Ive read my 98. 5 should wastegate around 20 and set an overboost code a like 22psi. When I installed my gauges, the engine was totaly stock, and a KN stock box air filter. Could easily hit 24 psi or so. OK, Im the 2nd owner, so perhaps the wastegate has been messed with, but in this case that isnt likely. But why no overboost code??

Don't fight it. Boost is good. You're well within the range of the turbo and you're not setting codes.

I honestly can't remember what any of my trucks did stock. Well the 24v dynoed 210 bone stock, but I dunno what the boost was.

Summary, you're getting fuel, have no boost leaks, and ain't upsetting the computer. I'd just suffer with that. ;)

My guess would be you guys with higher than 20 psi of boost have a map sensor that is not reading properly (thus why the ECM isn't defueling - it isn't seeing your full boost) and your wastegate isn't opening completely.

My truck pretty much mirrors Analogs truck !
