Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 24v-12v parts interchange

Can a 2001 block be used to build a 97 motor? what all is different? same for crank and rods, can they be used in a 12 valve build-up? I though i read before that 24valve rods are stronger? Thanks for the input.

Some of the differences would be cam, head, injectors/f. inj. pump/lines/LP, pistons, intercooler, exhaust manifold, timing cover, valve cover.



You can do a P-pump conversion on the 24v. Would probably be easier and cheaper to do.

I'm building a 97 motor. I need a block, can a 2001 block be used, thats it. I'm aware of the other differences, just need to know if the blocks are the same.

Probably the best thing to do would be to get serial numbers off both engines if you can, and call the closest Cummins Distributor parts room and ask them the question. Ask if the part number for the 97 block superseeds to the part number of the 01 block, or interchanges in any way.

Be careful of the port threading , the 01 block may use straight thread metric o/r fittings where the 97 uses pipe threads.

you'll find a few other things, mostly minor. The STORM thread/o-ring fittings instead of NPT is one as noted above. The block heater goes into a threaded boss instead of replacing a cup plug. There are more ribs and threaded holes to mount twin turbos, and dual turbo drain bosses.

If anyone cares..... The serial number on the 2001 crank and rods were the same as the '97 crank and rods. My '97 rods were made in England, and the '01's were made in Brazil and Mexico , looks like someones trying to save some $$$.
