So my 01' with 88k on it just took a dump on me. getting a VERY loud clank from the pan area and leaf-blower like blow-by from the crankcase vent. Research on here has lead me to believe I have a clogged/broken piston cooler that has lead to a scored cyl. #@$%! So my options are sell it as is or fix it myself as diesel shops want $10K to throw in a rebuild

Anyways I'm going to have to pull the beast out in my driveway, and I've only every removed the engine from a jeep cj so It's going to be an affair and would appreciate any advice from y'all.

thanks in advance!

Get an engine hoist or cherry picker, a couple of buddies who aren't afraid to get dirty, and a very stout engine stand to put it on. Otherwise it's not much different than pulling a motor from the CJ.

pull the valve cover, take off the last set of rockers and pushrods and you can snake it out, without dropping the pan off. shouldn't take too long. Obviously take off your front end stuff.

I just pulled one with trans on(not recommended). these motors are VERY heavy use great care. be sure if picker is on wheels that the wheels will roll with the weight of that engine (mine sank) also keep some plywood and boards around to use as blocks or wedges to prevent any unwanted vehicle contact in case of repositioning. drop trans first, and starter may hit mount or brakelines. remove wheels unless you can lift the motor REALLY high to get the pan over nose. take your time.

Just pulled mine out of a 99. By front end stuff I removed the bumper, Radiator and support, innercooler and all ac componants. Once all that was done it will come out by only having to lift it high enough to clear the oil pan. It took me by myself a good day with temps around 90* and high humidity. Still working at the disassemby at night. Make sure you support the transmission prior to seperation.

good stuff, that sounds like the hot ticket. no pun intended!

I just won an auction on e-bay for a pull-out 2001 non 53 longblock for 1500 bucks. so now no matter what I find inside that motor I'm covered. I'll post pics as I progress. <img src=http://img170. imageshack. us/img170/3860/reception003da7.jpg>
