I'm looking for some info on a 01' 24V auto. It starts and idles perfect, when you start to drive off it's like there is nothing, then fuel, then nothing, then fuel. The truck has a new lift pump and injection pump. Mods are a Van Akken box and small injectors.

I'm no 24V guy so anything will help. I'm trying to fix this via phone.

Jim

Is there blue smoke? Maybe got the injection pump key bacwards or somehting. I don't know how to explain it but there is a way to put it on wrong. My buddy Dave Lange did it once. Maybe he will chime in here. Hope this helps Jim.

Sorry about that Travis! The lift/Injector pumps are new about 5-6 months ago and doing fine. He only puts a few hundred miles a month on it.

I'm having him unplug the box and try that first.

What about the accelerator position sensor... ..... or whatever he called it. Like I said I know nothing about a 24V.

Jim

Any codes stored? When did this start happening? What is the fuel pressure at the VP44? Even with a new lift pump there are other things that can cause low pressure.

Paul

Well I'll add a few things here:

1. He has no fuel pressure gauge to hook up and I doubt there is one in a town of 4K.

2. He doesn't have access to a DRB(snap-on) tool as the only one around is in someone's rice bowl... . hint, hint!

Is there a way to check codes via key method..... I've heard of this but don't know the technique.

Were would one get the shrader valve for a fuel pressure gauge hook up.

You now know why I don't deal with 24V's

Thanks, Jim

Jim,

If you cycle the key on/off three times ending with the key on, it should display to codes in the speedometer section of the instrument cluster. The codes you see will be what is stored in the pcm as companion codes, not the cummins ecm that is on the side of the engine block. I don't know if the snap on scanner will access the cummins controller but the DRBIII will, and that is the controller you will need to pull codes from. You can do the fuel volume test without a scanner... unhook the feed line at the pump and run a hose into a clean container. Then bump the starter and leave the key on (engine not running), this should run the transfer pump for 25 second cycle and you should a minimum of 45 ounces of clean bubble free fuel in 25 seconds. Any less and you are looking for a weak lift pump, dirty fuel filter, or some restriction from the tank forward. I have seen a defective boost sensor cause this type condition, but its harder to test without a scanner. I have a brand new APPS sensor you are welcome to try if you want, just let me know. And just to keep it simple, once i saw one that the air filter was water soaked and acted similar as well. wish you were closer, i got the scanners and gauges you need for this one ;)

Dave

Thanks for the info Dave, I'll get that info to him. Funny he ran into an issue 5-6 months back and it was a bad lift pump and that took out the injection pump too. Even after changing both of those he never even got a fuel pressure gauge, maybe it's me but I would have bought some tools after that deal.

Jim

When my TPS (APPS) was going bad, it had a dead spot in it. The truck would feel like it shut off, and then it would be fine again.

If I didn't have the pedal in that exact location, the truck was just fine.

Also when he is trying to drive it will also not shift out of 1st gear..... or so he said, he even ran up to 2500 RPM with no shift. I don't know if the two relate.

Jim

I don't know how the two would relate. If the computer didn't see the APPS then it wouldn't reach 2500 rpm.

There is a hole in the APPS bracket for the transmission kickdown, but it's a mechanical connection to the APPS bellcrank.

FYI - I'm running an APPS from an automatic truck on my manual transmission truck.

Does anyone know if a "limp mode" would prevent the truck from shifting into 2nd?

Mine is doing exactly the same thing regarding not shifting, but not consistantly. It is reading code 1757, 1693, & 0216. The dealer installed a new VP44 and in tank "improved" transfer pump a few thousand miles back.

I have another dealer appointment Monday.

I wish I knew what the deal is.
