I was at the dealership today an saw a 24v being rebuilt. I asked what happened. They said # 6 piston was locking up due to the oil filter parts cloging up oil ports.

The dealer said Dodge was covering it now, but this is going to

change soon. FYI.

I saw the same exact thing about 3 months ago at the dealership in Sealy. The status of the engine was in dispute as the filter maker and Cummins and Dodge were in a crying match about it. The owner was having to pay out of pocket and (hopefully) get a refund from whoever finally stepped up and took responsibility for the failure. The mechanic wouldn't tell me what brand of filter it was, but he did say it was not a mopar or fleetguard.

Yep; use the stratopore LF3894 from Cummins (there are a couple older generation LF's from Cummins that are OK too). Anything else runs the risk of coming apart. Other mfg's filter media can't handle the high pressure and flow rate of the engine. Join Cummin's Power Boosters (free membership) and the filters are very reasonably priced with their discount.

We have been using the Napa Gold 1607 filter for over 370000 combined miles on three trucks with no problems. This in another good one to use.

Power Boosters club is not free. It is $20 a year or $50 for 3 years.

guys i was at my local dealer a couple of months back and they had just gotten a fax from dc listing all the approved filters. i think there were a total of 5 or 6. one was the mopar filter, and one was the cummins filter and the others were fleetguard filters. the fax said that these were the only approved filters to use at this time. my fleetguard 3652 was on the list. :)

i posted this on the BHAF thread but my local fleetguard/cummins dealer told me to be aware that napa's filters are made by wix, to napa's specs not wix specs. vaughn said the napa BHAF only flowed 6xx cfm vs the fleetguard 9xx cfm.

A friend with a 2000 had the same thing happen. He went to an oil change shop, they put a Fram filter on it, and he had #6 sieze up on the trunpike between Topeka & Emporia. The dealer at Emporia had two others with the same problem within the month, one of those had a Pennzoil filter. Why put a cheap filter on an expensive, million mile motor? Get Fleetguards, & stay with them.

I with Dennis here. How many expensive filters do you think you can buy for the price of a new or rebuilt engine plus labor? It just doesn't make any sense at all to price shop for filters for these engines. Talk about penny wise and dollar foolish!!! Fleetguard ONLY on my rig!!

I'm all worried now. Since changing my oil about 2,500 miles ago, my oil pressure has been "higher than normal" my truck usta idle at 60PSI oil pressure, and after changing oil it idles above that, maybe around 70PSI.

I have an STP filter (the blue one) on my truck. I've run it hard, and haven't had anyprobs. While I was at the store, I was under the impression that the STP filter was the same quality as a Bosch oil filter.

What should I do,, just change my oil and filter?

Is it possible, after the truck sits all night to change only the oil filter without losing any oil? ( I always fill my oi filter with oil before I install it )

TIA,

An increase in idle oil pressure after an oil and filter change is an ominous symptom to say the least. I would replace that oil filter with a Fleetguard ASAP and hope nothing is clogged up. Keep the suspect filter just in case something bad happens.

I MIGHT be a sign of trouble but not the problem that is failing engines.

Is the oil viscosity the same? Same brand?

Has the oil pressure increased the same amount when using this same combination before?

The problem the oil filters are causing is that a small nozzle gets plugged. It does not restrict flow enough to change oil pressure.

As a side note: My Cummins dealer charges around $8 for Stratapore filters. That is about what the auto parts stores around here charge for the other brands.

Same oil, DELO 400. same wieght oil.

We usually use a Penzoil filter. The place we change oil at is a Penzoil place, so, we ask for Delo 400 oil and they put a penzoil filter.

Guess I'll make an oil change before, or during the Texas Rally, as I will be runnin her pretty hard after the Texas Rally.

I just pickup up to Stratapore filters (LF3894) for $7. 15 each. I checked on the non-stratapore version for our application (I think it was a LF3349). It's cost was $3. 96. Unless your getting these "other" filters free, fleetgards cost is pretty reasonable.

I get mine at the local Peterbilt shop for about $8 for Stratapore. A little less than Geno's Garage and they are on the shelf as I walk in.
