I think I'd miss the rattle. Don't know though. It would be nice to hear yourself think when you’re standing next to the hood with it idling. :D

This was one of my considerations when I bought my truck. I wanted one that sounded like a diesel, not a gasser. I love going to the bank drive ups!:D

Mine is louder, than my 2000. I think it is because of no hood insulation. That is fine with me, one of the reason I love these trucks is the sound. Found that is one of the reasons people like Harley's versus Honda's. The Sound

Quiet??!!

My 2002 is really LOUD. There's a guy in my 'hood with a 12V that I never found offensive, and that was my reference when I decided to buy mine. I was taken aback by how much louder mine is.

I parked next to a 2001 3500 the other day in a parking lot and my 1999 was noticeably louder... kinda different sounding in a way. But both sounded good.

A quiet Cummins appeals to me about the same as a quiet Harley... :p ;) :D

The sound of a REAL diesel engine, to me, is part of the personality, mystique and image *I* value in a truck...

Bikers who want quiet buy Yamahas - truckers who want quiet buy Chevies... :p

To each his own!

Gary, you took the words right out of my mouth!!

I have always thought the 12 valvers were much louder than the 24 valve engines. I know mine is much quieter than my friends who all have 12 valvers... ... .

Oh well, at least it ain't no PowerStroke or DuraMax... ... ...

Fortunately I have not yet heard the new 2003 Dodge/Cummins, or I'm sure I'd be :{

My 02' is the loudest diesel truck I have been around. It must be because of the lack of hood insulation. My brother has a 2001 and his is much quieter on the outside on inside the cab.

I notice my 2002 is louder than my '95 truck. With both running side-by-side the 2002 is noticably louder (especially when cold), maybe it's because the 02 has no hood insulation. The 12V and 24V each have thier own sound characteristic, if you listen close enough.

I have heard some 24V trucks that are louder than others. The newer ones seem to be louder, but as already stated, this may be because of the lack of underhood insulation.

The 12V engines I have heard are quieter than 24V. They don't have the high pitch clatter that the 24V does. Sounds more like the big truck diesels. I personally favor the 12V.

Now the new common rail Cummins reminds me of the 12V sound, although it is a little more quiet. It still sounds good to me though.

Just my opinions.

If people at a stop light look over and expect to see a Kenworth Tri-axle dump with a straight pipe belching black smoke and a high pitched whistle noise... and see me instead... I'm happy. :D

Then new 03's are quiet enoght to pull up to the drive through window and not kill the truck they sound about as loud as the duramax's

At Muncie, I actually thought the common-rail ISB was quieter than the Duramuck... .

Remember, a 12-valve with a lot of timing makes all kinds of racket!

My 99 is pretty quiet and there is one '01 around here that is extremely loud, they are all different. Mine is the only 24V I have ever heard that is even close to as quiet as a 12V, and it is still quite a bit louder.

Found that is one of the reasons people like Harley's versus Honda's. The Sound

Remember: "Loud pipes save lives" On bikes it means your heard by motorists and you stand a better chance of not getting hit. In CTDs your heard and you stand a better chance of not getting cut off, not having sleepy pedestrians/children step off the curb in front of you, people will avoid riding in your blind spot because of all the noise from the tail pipe, small animals that mess up your fender wells will run in fear (come to think of it so will chevies:-laf ) etc... .

I look at the noise as a saftey feature. It keeps me awake and interested in driving. Love it. It's quite next to my Corvette I road race with straight exhaust.

I heard my first '03 HO at the Farm Progress Show in Iowa. Thought it was to quiet(although it still sounded O. K. ). All of the 24v's I've heard are a little louder and sound more like a semi :D than my 12v. Need to straight-pipe my truck. :D :D

Quite a range of comments on this topic... .

Next question is... . could the loudness have anything to do on which brand of oil... . ??

Also in consideration whether Synthetic or Natural could be a factor.

One more factor is if anyone is using an oil additive as well... . could one of these be a factor... ??

I am just making an opinion here... but would be interesting if each person above could post their oil type info on here ..... would be interesting to compare... ... :)
