It all comes down to injection pressure, injection quantity, ambient temperature, type of fuel, injection timing, pilot injection (whether your engine has it or not... . ), sound insulation, and one's own subjective hearing.

NOT having any oil in your engine is also a surefire way to make more noise.

Next question is... . could the loudness have anything to do on which brand of oil... . ??

Also in consideration whether Synthetic or Natural could be a factor.

One more factor is if anyone is using an oil additive as well... . could one of these be a factor... ??

I am just making an opinion here... but would be interesting if each person above could post their oil type info on here ..... would be interesting to compare... ... :)

I use Rotella T. Get most of my fuel at the same Mobil truck stop. Engine and exhaust is completely stock for now. Still has the hood insulation in place, even with 156,000 mi.

Saw a Ford F series medium duty bucket truck with a chipper box and 24v. , it sounded just right. :D

All 24valve trucks I have heard are way louder than most 12 valve trucks. My '02 is way louder than my old '93 although once you get inside my new truck is way quieter. I think the ISB's timing is way too advanced at idle giveing much louder idle knock, another idicater of this is during cold starts my engine sounds like it is just hammering inside and you almost have to start out in first even unloaded to keep from stalling the engine when cold. Another thing is regular idle torque seems way down from what my first gen used to have, my first gen once running was just about unstallable you prolly could start out in 4th gear if you wanted. My new truck doesn't have the idle torque and if the bore and stroke of the engine are the same that leads me to believe fueling ie. timing is to blame.

C. C. , it must just be a difference in trucks - my '02 is as quiet or quieter than my '91 was - and even when pulling our 7000 5er, will EASILY idle away from dead stop in 2nd gear, and probably would in 3rd, just never tried it...

I've noticed quite a bit of variability in the 'loudness' of stock 24V CTD's. I guess the mfg. spec limits for timing, injection pressure, etc. can result in quite a bit of difference in sound. My '01. 5 ETH is significantly louder at idle than my neighbor's 01. 5 ETC. He is stock and I have RV injectors and an EZ, but these bombs did not make any difference in the sound at least that I could tell.

I've noticed that PSDs seem to vary even more than CTDs soundwise. Some stock PSD Superdutys are literally twice as loud as others. Could be that some year models are louder than others, I know they have made changes in an effort to prevent cackle, so maybe this can account for the change in sound.

The earlier PSD's had a different injection setup... . that did NOTHING for cackle... . you can hear them a mile away and they sound in no way like the newer pilot injection PSD's...

At least you can't blame the noise on the injection pump... like on the P7100 12-valves... . the PSD doesn't even have one! :)

Most of the time I get people getting off their seats at the bus stops expecting to see the bus. You have to love their exspresion when they see a club cab truck. I have an 01 24v and find it much louder than even a bombed 12v and I love it. I feel its almost a bit of personality speaking for you.

My '01 ETH sounds a lot quieter when I take the EZ box off for a session at the stealers--I understand the EZ advances the timing.

My truck has very different sounds with different fuel. I had to buy fuel on a trip and about a half mile down the road I could hear engine noise over the radio, kinda freaked me out. Sounded like it was coming apart.

My truck is also a lot more engine noise since the EZ went on.
