Does anyone make a breather that will screw in or come close to fit in the oil fill cap? 24V VP injected

Thanks

Ian

Some of us with bypass oil filters are using a Stant #11111 (as I recall) cap it fits properly, and as seen, allows installation of the needed oil return line - they are a common auto parts item...

Gary, WOW THAT ENGINE IS SO CLEAN. Where does that line go to? Or is it just drop to the ground?

Thanks for the compliment - the line seen running from the Stant oil-fill cap attaches to the output side of the Frantz oil bypass filter seen here in the foreground on the passenger side of the engine bay next to the battery to which it is attached:

- we use the Stant cap because the OEM cap is a hollow 2-piece unit that can't be properly used for the oil return - the Stant is cheap, and a solid unit easily drilled and tapped for our particular mod, but perfectly suited for use as just a plain fill cap.

todays project

parts list

Dremel

Gorilla glue

Oil cap- Napa P/N: 703-1458

Breather Filter- Auto Zone P/N: 3998 Brand "Spectre"

clamp the cap in a vise with a rag or small towel (not too much or you'll break it) then drill a hole about 3/4" or what looks to be large enough for the rubber tube from the breather will fit in BUT not to big where it will be loose. I used a Dremel side Drill and then a deburring tool to finish up the hole. then put some glue on the rubber part of the filter as well as the oil cap. push in and youre done!

Note- test fit all your parts prior to glue! AND my filter was a little loose from the rubber gromet that was supplied so I glued that as well to keep it from vibrating while the motor is running

Gus have a pic of a 12V cover?

Thanks

I probably missed the original thread on this topic so I apologize if its been covered - what does this mod gain?

Helps relieve crankcase pressure caused by running higher than stock boost, which helps keep engine seals intact. The down side is you eventually get an oil film on your valve cover.

yes so true, had a lot of film on my 98 dodge 360 gasser with the same type of filter on the valve covers----got tired of having to wipe it every couple of weeks. Maybe a little different with the diesel, hope its works. DW

bingo!

I try to keep the motor clean and wiped down so It wont be a big deal to me.

There is a kit out there that relocates the breather on the front of the block up to the valve cover. Anyone heard of or know who makes it? I want (need) one for other reasons. Ever been out in the hill going down a steep slope and loose a gallon and a half of engine oil out the breather? With the relocated breather in the valve cover it prevents this!

how is the breather working for you? when you did this did you plug off the origanal hose? or are you using both to breathe? thanks for the reply

Cummins . . The new breather, Part number 3864201 and adapter, Part number 3976817, have reduced oil carryover on ISB 5. 9 engines. , using the Bosch VP44 fuel system,Install the new breather and adapter only after completing all other troubleshooting steps for oil carryover. Above is from Cummins, I install above then plugged the front breather hose with rubber cup/ heater hose cap ? 5/8" I think. Ran hose off new valve cover breather to transfercase area. 80,000 miles no problems. Part Numbers 3864201 Breather,o-ring seal 3864202, Adapter Part number 3976817, o-ring seal 3990084. My parts came with o-rins installed. This breather accepts a 19. 05 mm (3/4" ID hose.

The breather relocation kit from Cummins does work. The front cover Dodge spec breather is blocked using a 5/8" rubber cap, from NAPA. No oil leaks on steep hills forward or reverse . You can make your own set up as many members do. I ran a hose from the new valve cover mounted breather to the area of the transfer case, no smell, no leaks. Installed factory bottle on end of hose sideways. Cummins PN are Breather 3864201, Adapter PN 3976817 . O ring for breather 3864202, O ring for adapter 3990084. I paid Hoesli diesel 26 dollars for breather I did not buy the adapter I made one on a lathe . The clean engine compartment is great. .

IC,

What is that to the left of the filter on the side of the valve cover?

Is that a breather vent coming out of your valve cover it so how does it install and do you have part numbers and where to get the parts I am very interested in installing one of those. If you don't mind sharing with us.

So it is not abnormal to have positive crankcase pressure? And blow by? if so how much is normal?

Thanks David
