My t-case let loose last week, would pop out of gear then back in, sounded and felt pretty bad. Snap ring was ok, so I decided to replace the whole t-case. The only one I could find in the area (eastern NV) with the right spline count (29) was from a 24v with no speedo sensor hole. It bolted in fine, just now I am trying to decide if I want to keep this t-case, and figure out how to put the speed sensor on the rear axle. So, does anyone know the easiest way to do this? I do have rear wheel abs, I don't know if that makes a difference.

Or maybe it would be easier/better to rebuild the old one. Haven't had time to take it apart and see what the problem is.

In '98 they started taking the speed from the ABS sensor in the rear but that takes all different electronics probably. I have no idea how you would do it in a '97. My uncle has a '98 that recently started popping out of gear and I had to go haul him home. He tore it down and found that the little shift fork pads were worn out as well as the grove in the shift collar they ride in. He thinks it was low on oil. Maybe you have a similar situation. I'm not sure what all he ended up replacing. Unless the speed thing was real easy to convert I would probably at least pull yours apart and see what's wrong. I have never had one open but I think they are pretty simple and easy to work on.

It wasn't low on oil. It was out of oil. Hadn't checked it recently, and the fluid must've leaked out slowly enough to not get noticed. So, reminder to check that. I'll tear it apart over Thanksgiving, see how bad it is, if it's fixable. Hopefully it's just the shift fork. . It didn't sound very good at all when it popped out then back in at about half throttle at 70 mph.

It would not pop out of gear in 4lo, for some reason.

Oh, does anyone know if there are kits to put lower low range gears in a 241DLD? I'll have it apart anyways.

I took apart the t-case. . the small shift fork pads were totally gone and the shift fork had lots of wear on it. The wear was letting it slip out of 2wd into nuetral, but once engaged into 4-low, there was enough of the shift fork left to keep the gear engaged on the planet gears. I was quite amazed at the simplicity of the whole t-case. A new shift fork is on the way so I can rebuild the t-case. All the other components looked in fine shape still, even though the t-case was out of oil.
