24V with manual transmission

I am close to owning my first CTD (2003, 2500, 24V)after driving a 98 Ram QC with the 318 for the last 5 years. My current truck is extremely weak, and has trouble pulling my 12' pop up trailer up fairly steep Eastern KY hills. I have been told that the 318 with a manual transmission is "supposed" to be weaker than the same truck with an auto transmission by Dodge mechanics. They have looked my truck over twice, and could find nothing wrong with it.



My question is, can I expect the same out of the 24V with a manual transmission? I like how dependable it has been in my truck, but don't want another "throttled" back engine to go with it. :{



I guess it boils down to this, will the manual truck have the same power as the auto truck?

If you're worried about a weak 24V behind a 5 or 6 speed, DON't BE.



You're coming into a whole new world of power . having had the Auto, and now a 6 speed, there is no turning back for me. Pulling a 12' pop up will be nothing for a cummins either auto or manual. If you really want to see what it will do, load the pop up full of bricks .



If you find the 24V just doesn't do enough in stock fashion, that's what we're here forOo. .

When I pull my 28' car trailer empty (GVW 4200, and the engine is still stock and not even loose yet), I can't even tell there is anything behind the truck... . the CTD 6 spd (if that's what you are getting) is the HO engine which is likely to become legendary for stock power, not to mention when it's been BOMBED!



My company truck is an '01 1500 318 auto regular cab LB. I can hardly stand to drive it anymore.

The truck I will probably get is not the HO, it is the 24V with the 5-speed. I would rather have the HO, but I can't find one that meets my wants.

They have one just like your signature on the lot here in Suffolk, except its a SRW 3500..... bit of a drive, but hey, you only do it once.....

I passed a Dodge V8 that was towing a Boler trailer(11' long) up a very long hill in B. C. He had passed me a few times on the downhills, but I walked by him on the uphill with my 35' triple slide 5th wheel. Total weight was 23,500 lbs at the scales. (5spd. slightly bombed though!) 1500lb trailer against 15,500lb trailer.

NO gasser (even a V10) can ever come close to a 12V OR 24V Cummins, especially in fuel economy, life expectancy, or POWER {stock or tweaked}. The 318 V8 is a good engine, but a little shy for a heavy quad cab truck. The 360 V8 is some better torque wise, but the 360 Cummins will always get the job done.

The poop-eating grins and push in the back you'll receive with the slightest amount of throttle at low engine rpm's will be worth the extra $$$ you shell out up front.

12' trailer? What 12' trailer. When I got my first Cummins in '94 I felt it was like driving a locomotive. God speed. You could even pull your old truck and 12' popup trailer pretty well!!!
