I am in the market for a used 24valve truck that is reliable and will be good for high mileage work. To fit in my budget, I am looking at high mileage trucks so I am curious as to what to look out for. I know I need to check the VP44 wires to see if they have been tapped, but what other things can I do to check reliability of a truck. Anyone with a high-mileage 24valve with a 5 or 6speed for sale email me.

I lost my 6 speed at about 260K. When I talked to the trans shop that I bought a new one from they said that anywhere above 200K the manuals start to crap out and that I did good. 3300$ did'nt feel to good though. Jake

Here's what I'd look for...

Ask the owner for compies of the maint records.

Get the VIN # and take to DC to run the maint records on it.

if you are mechanically inclined, there are checklists on the internet. Take your tools. Check for leaks. check levels on everything. Look at tire wear. open the hood and start it up. Look and listen for unusual noises. Drive it. Check the truck for codes.

Good luck, Wiredawg

You can tell a hard/well used truck by the color of the turbo. Carmel/tan is one that has been worked hard. This can be a tell tell for the trucks previous life. If your looking at an auto, brake test the transmission. The above posts are also good advice, good luck with your purchase. Mike
