An older Gent. that works with me owns a 12 v '94. Doesn't do alot with it but said he had looked into getting a "performance chip" (from whom, I don't know) to the tune of $750:eek: It was too rich for his blood, and declined. What do you guys reccomend for a 40+/- kick, that is reasonably priced. If it were a newer truck I would recommend an EDGE or VanAaken, used for 350 -450 bucks, but I don't know enough about the 12 valve trucks to recommend anything. Alot of smoke would be an issue for him I am sure, since I think he attended God's 6th birthday party:p A little seat of the pants kick, nothing major, that requires beefing everything else up. It is an auto, and lowwww miles. Thanks Guys!!!:D

One of those...

smaller TST plates would be easy to come by. Lots more power for small $$$

What does he intend to do with this "souped up" truck. Longevity comes to mind. Guages are preferred if going far beyond stock fueling.

I'm not so sure he plans to do much at all. Just wants a bit more power for passing and such. at 70+ years old, he isn't much into hot rodding. Just not happy with the pure stock power of the earlier Cummins. I think 30-40 horse would satisfy him (for now). I am not sure what TST plates are or what price range they are in. Can you help out a little? Thanks. Dennis

Find out what power HE wants.

Don't just take it for granted that since he is 70 years old he's an old codger who just wants to sit on the porch or mosey along with his truck. He might just want to be able to blow away the kids in their Mustangs or he may want to pull a big 5th wheel and blow by Powerstrokes.

Sounds like you think he's OLD or something:eek:

Newf Limo,

First and forth most, electronic do-dads of any type are NOT going to help a 12 v engine. It doesn't have an ECM and the PCM only monitors systems.

Steve is right on target a fuel plate of his choice of brand and horse power. 12 v's have Manual injector pump and are less expensive to add horses!

You can try turning the AFC control screw up a little, this will help out on low rpm. AFC screw allows more fuel into delivery valves per boost ratio(or something like that). Helps out low end power anyway.

He sounds like a smart old man ;) to turn down a gizmo that wouldn't of worked on his truck anyway. ;)

I hope when I'm his age I'm just as smart.

Sorry for being too judgemental!

The 12 valve engine is generally woken up with a new plate, bigger injectors, different turbo or housing, governor spring kit. Kinda in that order.

I guess it all depends on what he wants from his truck.

For the increase hje looking for,get him some guages, show him how to use them, and start by sliding his stock fuel plate forward . 040",and turn up ihs trans line pressure 2 turns. This should satisfy him from what you say,if not have him buy a TST#6 plate, keep in mind this will lead to trans problems with heavy towing and a baby it driving style.

Slide his stock plate all the way forward, adjust the star wheel forward some, and plug the wastegate line, all this costs $0. 00, and it will give him plenty of power for passing. He doesn't need guages. With those mods I just mentioned, I never could get past 1100 deg at the manifold, that is with a 20 FT goosneck with 10 head of grown cattle headed up hill with it on the floor. He WILL need a K&N filter though 60 bucks I believe. He will enjoy the power I am sure. If he isn't satisfied after that, then I would look into an aftermarket plate, if I did that, I might consider a pyrometer. I seriously doubt he will cause harm to his transmission at all with only a slid stock plate.

Just my . 02 cents

All HE NEEDS:

Piers has the TST plate/kit on sale for 220. 00 right now.

If he adds the TST it is recomended (strongly) that he get the pyrometer/boost guages too (195. 00 from Geno's Garage) So, for about 400, he could really wake that 12v up! Putting a Banks system on a 1994 would be a HUGE waste of money (IMO)

If he goes with a TST plate, even a #6 which is 230/605 in a 94,the trans will need a shift kit,or modified valve body at the minimum,if he tows at all. I slipped my 96's trans within 2 weeks of putting the TST #6 in my truck,my tc was slipping in lockup in OD. If he slides the plate he can get away with a stock trans with 2 turns on the pressure screw.

Newf... tell him to slide the stock plate forward and maybe do some AFC mods. just be careful of the transmission. heck, if you wanted to have a get-together i could head up and help him out:D

btw, you weren't in scarborough a few weeks ago were ya? i saw the same truck as yours, but it had diamond plate running boards.

Banks Kit

Hey Matt (Holeshot Holset)

I really enjoyed your "non comment" about the Banks goodies.

In my earlier days my truck ran better with a Banks system only because my wallet was $1400 lighter (less weight to haul).

My 96 ran better with a stock plate and the timing at 15. 5 degrees than with the "goodies".

Having the timing slightly advanced (or even put where it's supposed to be) really helps.

We all learn from experience:( .

There's more that one way to make HP/torque... . Banks stuff is okay... but it's just a lot of dough for stuff that if you did a little research you could do yourself for thousands less.

BANK$ :-laf
