24v'r needing help with 12v

Guys, I've been reading about a dowel pin problem and a KDP. Are they one in the same? My dad has a 97 auto with 290,000 miles on her. The cover there on the front was leaking out of one bolt, I crawled up under there and snugged it with a wrench. Not to tight as I thought it would be tourked. I don't have a tork wrench. Is there anything I need to do as we don't want a problem. Also have any of you had any problem with the power steering pump leaking? I think his is leaking on a pressure line that goes from the reservore to the underneath of the pump. Any help would be appreciated.

KDP = Killer Dowell Pin. If the leaking bolt was the one hidden by the idler pulley you may have and a KDP failure. Check the 2nd thru 4th picture here: http://www.flex.net/~triplem/new/dowelpin.htm



If that is the problem that site shows one way to fix it. Some have had good luck with JB Weld. Cummins fixes the problem as described here: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34069



If the KDP has not bit your dad yet there are two ways to do a corrective fix. I recommend using the blocking tab method. Others recommend using a jig to install a blocking screw. It's cheap to prevent and expensive to fix the damage if it falls out.

Your leak underneath sounds like the oil pressure feed line that goes from the engine block oil galley to the bottom of the vacuum pump.

Thanks guys, That info really shed some light on things. Rammin on also e-mailed me with some info. My dad is worried to death now. I've got some things to look for as soon as the weather clears. I sure hope the dowel pin has not come loose Rammin on has said he would help me fix the problem if the pin is still there. Man, this is great! This is the way we keep these trucks rolling. I can't thank you all enough! I sure hope I can help someone like this one day!
