Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 2500 axle question?

My dads 2001 has a one ton rear end. So does my 96. I was wondering what the difference is between what we have and the new sigle wheel one tons? If it is a one ton axle is it just the rating and springs that give it a one ton name? I was just wondering. Thanks guys.

I had read the axles would not be made by Dana. Other differences you might see between a single and a dually would be: Axle width, hub configuration, axle tube size, spring perches, etc.

2500 Auto = Dana 70

2500 5 speed = Dana 80

3500 = Dana 80

2003 = American Axle



2500 HD and 3500 both have 3" wide rear springs although the specifics of the leaf may vary. Best bet is to measure your two trucks.



The difference between the 70 and 80 is visible from behind the truck (much bigger center section on the 80) but the housing ends (hubs) are the same.



The 2500 80 and 3500 80 are also different. The dually rear end has a different backing plate and drums to fit the inner wheel.



Some have reported that the width is also different. I've seen a 3500 converted to single wheel, they just changed the box and removed the spacers from the front then installed normal wheels.

Add brake cylinders to that list, the ones on my truck suck! I changed them for the 1 ton's or 27MM version and NOW I have brakes.

The Dana-80 has a much narrower (is that even a word?) differential cover than the 70.....
