Did Dodge make a 2500HD or just the standard 2500?

The reason I'm asking is I tried to put a set of Timbren overloads & the first set didn't fit with the Dana 80 because the brackets were for a 3. 5" axle.

They acted like I screwed up when I ordered a 2500 set when they say I should've ordered a set for a 2500HD? All manual trans trucks have Dana 80's & I've never seen anything about there being a 2500 & a 2500HD

The only HD 2nd gen I've heard of was the transfer case - 241HD, available only with the snowplow package. Couldn't get one in Las Vegas, go figure?

The early 2500 was the heavier running gear on a 1500 frame. The 1500/2500 had a 7" frame. The 2500HD is the same basic frame as the 3500, 9". The rear sway bar was part of the Camper package and with the added springs allowed a 3000 lb camper in a 2500. It was like a 3500srw today. In addition, 4. 1 gears were required to get limited slip rear diff. in 96-97 and maybe 98 12v since they were basically the same as the 97 w/diff dash. The regular 2500 was dropped and all the 2500s were HD, but I don't know what year, might have started w/24v Cummins in 98. 5.

I 100% agree with jtwcummins.

The HD versions of the 2500 looked like it had a 2" lift, due to the taller frame and didn't need a lift to go to 33x12s. I too don't remember when they dropped the 2500HD vs 2500. I read a lot about it back in 98 when I was getting ready to buy a 99. . in 98 and 99 it was not an option. So jtwcummins maybe correct that it happened at the same time as teh 24V.

At 98/99 time frame the frame for the gasser and oil burner were the same and the "HD" option went away.

The light duty 2500 were only available on the 2nd gens for a couple of years. These trucks had 8 lug wheels with a semi floating 9 1/4 chrysler rear and a Dana 44 front. The base motor was a 318, optional was a 360. I think the GVW was 7200 lbs. No diesel or v10 was offered on these trucks. The heavy dutys base engine was a 360 with dana 60 front and Dana 60 full floating rear axles. GVW on these trucks is 8800lbs.

My 94 2500 is a light duty. It has the Dana 44, 231 transfer case, optional 360 gas engine and I have a Dana 60 rear axle with factory 4. 10 limited slip. These trucks, as well as the 1500 have 2 1/2" wide rear leaf springs. The hd versions have 3" wide springs.

The axle itself is not a true Dana 80 BTW. It's referred to as a Dana 70/80 hybrid. It has Dana 70 axles and a Dana 80 pumpkin.

My 97 is an HD model. I think it became an HD when the camper package with overloads was added. It's 8800 lbs, I think the others are 7000 or something. I do remember getting the HD because my shell weighs 500 and I didn't want to loose a lot of carrying capacity over my older truck.

This truck reminds me of the F-250 light duty...

The CTD and V10 only came HD in the early 2500. I still have the sales lit, window sticker and original order form for my truck. Keep this for all vehicles I buy and when I sell them the new owner gets them. Also helps when talking about history of the truck, like 4. 1 required for LSD. The camper package added rear sway bar and more spring rating and was only available on HD. The base engine on HD2500 was the 5. 9, 360 cu in, gasser.
