Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Truck not running well

Ok question for the dually people.

Can you install 255x85x16's on the stock dually rims without adding a spacer or the like?

Thanks!

I ran some on my 96 dually but had some 02 rims. The 02 rims had about 3/8" more offset than the stock 96 rims. Could not fit a set of chains on the duals and had about 3/4" gap in between.

I believe the 2001 and up rims are the wider ones, maybe it's 2000. I have an early 2001 with drum brakes and the 255's fit without any spacers or issues. Generally if the truck came with 235's you can use 255's and if it came with 215's you can use 235's without spacers.

The quick answer is - it depends.

I put a set of BFG 255/85R16 MT on my 2001. Had about 3/4-inch clear between the dual rear sidewalls. And, I was able to lower rear tire pressure as low as 30PSI without changing that clearance significantly. (Keep in mind, these 255's are a D-rated tire - 65PSI max. ) But, I didn't haul more than 500lbs or so with those, so I don't know how they would do with a load. Got the BFG tires replaced; had a bad set that couldn't be balanced; went back with stock size Michelins (235/85) because I couldn't find another 255 quickly.

However - is the 2004 model in your signature the dually you're asking for? If so, don't those 3rd-gen models have 17-inch wheels?

Hope this helps,

John

If the truck came with 215s, you'll need spacers or update to the later 2nd gen rims. 235 is the limit on the 215 equipped truck rims without spacers. 255s on trucks that came with 235s. It may also depend on the brand of tires. Some brands are wider than others for a given tire size or rim width.

I have 235s on my Ram. 215s were OEM size.
