Competition Pull Results TTPA, Genesee county Mi, 8-19-06

Finished up swapping in a 271 transfer case into the truck Sunday night.

Actually got it up and bolted in without a jack or hoist

Everything fits and I don't think I'll have any problem with frame clearance.

On my 98, the speed sensor is in the rear axle, so that was not an issue. You 94-97 guys will have to consider that when doing this conversion.

The linkage (also different on a 98+ truck) worked out great with no tweaks needed other than adjusting the length of the rod. I had a harder time getting the stupid bushing off the metal rod from the old tcase than actually setting up the linkage for the 271.

Haven't had a chance to drive it yet because the truck is down at the driveshaft shop having some BULLETPROOF driveshafts being put in (twist-off resistant).

When I got my tcase, I also bought a slip yoke that sports 1480 u-joints. Its BIG, and has the damper as well. The old slip yoke from my 241 DLD will nearly fit INSIDE the 271's slip yoke.

I will see if I can get some pictures up tonight of the new rear driveshaft and tcase.

I do need to figure out how to get the vacumn actuator to work right. . The electrical switch seems to have a longer "nipple" on it so I don't think the mechanical setup from the old tcase has enough throw to engauge the vacumn to engauge the CAD.

Thanks CAHammer, JRAdkins, Chaz Estep, & others for your help & advice in this project.

Slide the collar over on the CAD and weld it!! Another option would be get a 2WD solenoid, find the vacuum supply and then use the solenoid to operate the CAD. I think the 2wd low kits are less than $100. The posilocks are closer to $199. I would only do the 2wd low option if you have a new or recently refurbished CAD. Cause if the CAD goes out your back to know 4WD.

Congrats on the conversion! I did mine about a month ago, and it is a very good mod.

I had a flange put on the output shaft of mine, and changed the drive shaft.

I agree with the bushing! That thing was a pain.

I had to modify the skid plate mounting a little for some extra clearance.

I would love to see some pics and also some details on the slip yoke (brand / part number) as I am planning to do the same thing someday. What size of drive shaft are you having made? diameter/wall thickness?

Also curious what torque convertor you are runnin', I assume its not the standard goerend TC? Thanks!

I didn't take any direct pictures of the slip yoke and will only be able to get a picture of it installed now. .

The shaft is 4. 095" thick and is . 180 wall tubing.

The converter is a 15 blade modified stator, I am the only person running it, ZStroken will have his soon.

Garret,

If you wanna test that thing out there is a pull down here in Nashville, Indiana on August 4th.

The usual crew from around here should be there... ...

Make it the 5th and I can go. I will have some new things to test out. My new work schedule has really put a damper on the pulling schedule.

How is the iron giant? 6th low launches in the future?? :-laf

Right! :-laf

Dan,

I havent hooked with the new clutch yet... . that should be the first hook in Nashville.

Your not the only one with the some new toys to try out... ... There are now 3 other trucks close to me that will be running the same area of hp... . :D

12V, 24V, HPCR's what are they?? what did you do to your driveshafts?? What are the ujoints that are on the stockers? Did you go bigger? I have a biggy HP thing that just got shipped out today. Now I just have to work on tuning it.

Yeah 3rd hi as I remember is too high. I might try some 5th lo runs again someday... ... .

The trucks to look out for: One out of Bargersville, Indiana 24valve dually.

One out of Seymour, Indiana 24 valve (you know this one).

The other is a Common rail dually out of Salem, Indiana.

And of course your favorite truck out of Columbus, Indiana :-laf

As always we'll leave the light on for you down here in beautiful southern Indiana ;)

Nice work Garret.

With that 3rd gen transfer case and those 3rd gen U joints you might as well throw in a common rail engine to complete the package... :D

Rear driveshaft is 1 piece, 4. 095 tubing by . 180" thick.

1480 U-joints on both sides.

Front driveshaft is 3" tube with slip yoke, 1410 on the yoke, CV on the tcase end.

Garret,

How long did that new rear one-piece driveshaft come out to be? I am going to be swapping in a 271 here very shortly since my 241HD just recently gave out on me and wanted to get some more info on this swap.

After reading your posts about it the only questions I had were about the rear driveshaft length and if you have a manual trans in that truck?? If this new t-case swap can allow me to go to a one-piece rear driveshaft and junk the carrier, I will be a happy man.

Thanks, for the info. :D

Joe

The rear driveshaft is 70 or 71" long. I have an automatic transmission.

You will have to get a beefy driveshaft and I'm sure you can go with 1 piece. . It doesn't matter if you have an auto or manual.

What makes the 271 better than the 241 other than physically bigger what are the internal benefits?

Had my front driveline done this way also 1410 joints and cv and 1410 pinion pinion yoke change also went with same slip yoke as rear driveline 1. 5" versus 1 3/8" splines.

Cool, thanks Garret, that length is probably going to be pretty darn close to what I am looking to get. Just ordered my 271 case today, great people to deal with @ TCE. I spoke with Vernon and he hooked me up with a great deal for $1000 just like what BBD paid. They will be putting a new mainshaft inside of it to accept the flange style yoke instead of the original slip style yoke.

Still wondering if I need to go to larger u-joints on the rear cuz then I am going to have to go to a larger yoke on the axle which I have no idea where to start looking for that. Did you have to go to a larger yoke on the rear axle?

Thanks for the info. ,

Joe

Very nice conversion! I wish I could have put a 271 into my truck instead of my 241HD but I needed the speedo!! In the future if I ever have problems with my T-case I will make the swap and forget about the speedo or try to figure out a way to make that work.

My drive shafts are identical to yours only my rear shaft is 84" long! no one up here would build them for me in Canada so I had Haisleys hook me up with them! turned out great and balanced perfectly (can't feel any vibes anyway)

Nice job... RyanB
