One down, 8 to go...Kenworth steer axle updates

I got a friend of mine that has a 2840 John Deer and he was asking me if there is any way to get a little more HP out of it. I believe it is a 1977. I told him we probably could tweak the pump by turning the screws on it. Is this true in this case?

He has also told me he see a little blue smoke coming from the stack when at idle. I’m not sure if it is oil of if it is the bluish diesel smoke you sometimes see. I have not seen or checked this tractor out yet but I wanted to get some info on it.

Thanks.

I'm afraid I can't help put on the pump, but I'm pretty sure there is a screw you can turn. Never been around that particular model of tractor, but if it doesn't have a turbo ( I suspect it does not), put a pyro on it so they won't burn it up. Would be a good idea even if it does.

As to the blueish smoke at idle, don't worry about it, unless the engine uses a lot of oil. It is otherwise normal. Just the diesel. Most of the older tractors do that.

This is one of the things I am going to do. Is put a pyro in like you said better safe than sorry.

You are also correct it dose not have a turbo.

As far as the smoke I believe it is like you said. Just the norm. It hardly uses any oil at all.

This weekend I’m going to try and put the pyro in along with a new tach, and some new work lights.

My dad has a '78 model of that tractor. It was pumping out a bunch of bluish smoke. I pulled off the air filter which is right behind the right front screen and tapped a couple years  worth of dirt. Usually the filters are reusable, I tried to wash this one out and it turned to mud.

For the love of your sanity DO NOT run that tractor out of fuel. I have bled that system 3 times. First two were my fault.

Yes you can play with the fuel screw on that model to get a lil more out of it just dont get to greedy. Dad had 2640 boosted to about 80 hp which is about what a 2840 is rated.

Ok help me out here a little bit. Where about might the screw be ands what am I all looking for on this pump. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I would like to know whether it has a CAV or Roosamaster pump on it. There are different things to do on each pump, though the Roosamaster will DELIVER more fuel. Definitely put a Pyrometer on it and clean out the intake. By clean out I mean figure out a way to get rid of the factory housing and plumb in one of the new Amsoil filters. I have a 1976 Oliver 1365 factory rated at 58hp. now putting out over 90hp. with a CAV pump. I changed the restrictive air intake over to Amsoil and dropped over 350degrees on the pyro while on the local Deere dyno. Now I need more fuel. . The best thing you can do is call Columbus Diesel and talk to them, they will be very helpful as to what you can and cannot do... . Enjoy, MArc

I work at a John Deere dealer as a mechanic. The blue smoke at idle is COMPLETELY normal. I have a 2940 (updated 2840) that does the same thing. As far as turning it up, you can, but I can't remember how to right now, but I know a guy thats turning 100HP with no mods other than the pump.

I would be careful turning up the engine to far as this model is known for a week differential. It is basically a 2640 drivetrain W/ a 6cly. engine ahead of it and bigger rubber.

JDepaolo If you could help me out here I would greatly appreciate it. From what I have been told it is a Roosamaster pump on it.

I’m not planning on getting to greedy on the fuel screws, I just want a bit more hp from it. It is not a daily work tractor, more or less just a weekend chores tractor. jmorse Thank you for the info on the drive train.

Like I said before I have not seen this tractor yet. I’m planning to do some work to it this weekend.

Please keep all the good info coming this way.

Thanks.
