Can someone post a picture or two of 285/70R/17's on factory 3rd gen wheels for me? There were some posts years ago on the subject, but I can't find anything more recent.

I need new tires for the '07 before the snow and I'm thinking of going just a bit bigger this time around. Thanks in advance.

Are you looking for height or width, or both?
IMO, and this is just an opinion because people mount them all the time, I think 285/70's are too wide for the OEM rims. I never felt they looked exactly right either. I think 255/80's are a better fit. Gives you some extra height without ballooning the tires out. Not to mention the wider the tire the more wear is put on the front end as well as throws more crap along the side of the truck.

265/70/17 = 10.4" tread width, 7.3" sidewall, 31.6" overall height

285/70/17 = 11.2" tread width, 7.9" sidewall, 32.7" overall height

255/80/17 = 10.1" tread width, 8" sidewall, 33" overall height.

255/80's would make the truck set roughly 3/4" higher while maintaining roughly the same width, 285/70 would raise the truck roughly 1/2" while adding close to an inch on the tread width.

These are rough measurements and will vary slightly by tire manufacturer and is assuming proper rim width but is a good general comparison.

Isnt new tire shopping so much fun? For the first time in my Dodge/Ram ownership I will be retaining the OEM size . They finally got that part right with the 18" wheels/tire size.

I'm totally the opposite. I've never put a larger tire on any of the trucks I've owned. This time I'm looking for a little more width and height.

I'm likely going to throw a set of wheel flares on it this fall. I absolutely hate the look of flares on these trucks and I especially hate the look of flares with stock tires. They look a little more agreeable to me with a bigger tire under the fender. It's purely a look thing for me. I'm not considering it for any other reason.

Since 2012 with 315/70-17 on stock alloy wheels on the road, installed a set of OEM Powerwagon Flares thats all. perfect looking truck.
285/70 is more then Okay to use.

I dug up a couple photos of my '05 with 285 Toyo MTs.

Those old posts probably involved me. I always chicken out and stay stock. I so need a dead on speedo, due to the numerous speed traps. Also, I don’t want to make the truck higher, but the ratio change would be nice if ever slight.

Yea, I'll probably chicken out also. But, now that I'm not pounding this truck tens of thousands of miles a year, it would be nice to do something a little different with it. I have to make a decision soon though, my back tires are starting to show chords.

I'll also add that I have a brand new set of chrome clad aluminum wheels off of an '06 that I will probably use this time around. My originals are still strait and true but showing 11+ years of use in the salt.

Our early G-56's yielded a low final drive ratio. Some 285-75-17's will give you a bit of rpm relief.

You need 285/75/17's for a better ratio on that rpm challenged G-56, 305's would be better. Need a tuner to reset mph.

What pictures do you want, I can grab some tomorrow. End shot to see how the tires are relative to the fenders? I've run 2 sets of 285/75R17 on stock wheels (50K each set) and will be buying another set before winter. Probably go with the Toyo's this time. No rubbing or other such issues. Stock suspension, no lift or leveling kit. I did have aftermarket rims for a short while and didn't like how the tires stuck out. With the stock rims the 285/75s look like how the truck should have come from the factory. The wheel well openings are just too big for the stock tires.

I carried a full size 285/75 spare on the oem steel wheel, until the winch froze with rust and I destroyed it getting the spare off.....

Some current ones of the ratty truck with 285/75R17 Duragrapplers and an old Toyo on the steel wheel from the spare. Anyone know how to rotate the pictures?

285/mm wide with a 70 series sidewall height is shorter than a 285/75R17. 285/70 will only affect the speed by a couple of mph. No affect with any other abs or speed control with a NV5600. I've been running 285/70R17 on my 05 3500, (pics on my profile) since 07.

I hate to admit it, but I chickened out. Ended up with 265's again. When I started adding up the cost of buying 5 tires to have a matching spare, I just couldn't justify it.

Ended up with my old standby Firestone Destinations again. I've had such good luck with them I just had to go back. The $60 rebate offer they had going didn't hurt either ;)
