Girlfriend and I test drove a '99 CTD 2500 today. She is looking for a truck and thought why not.

Anyway, looking around I noticed it had 285 Wild Country tires on the stock 6. 5" wheels. I know stock '99s (and maybe 2000s) came with 6. 5 and not 7 or 7. 5" wheels.

They did not look too "balloon-y" and fit real well.

I am going to need tires in a few months and would like bigger but 265 is about all I can go (what I have on now).

Can I do 285s or go 265s again and save up for bigger wheels for next time?

How much bigger, in all dimensions, are 285s compared to 265s? In US measurements if you can, I don't like metric :)

Thanks, Nick

Hi Nick; i went with 265s. That is the largest that the tire shop would install on the factory rims. They said it was a liability issue. To go larger I would have had to go to 8" rims. I couldn't justify it at the time. - Maybe on the next set. I'll have more ponys to push them then. ;)

285mm versus 265mm is 20mm difference. There are 25. 4mm per inch. So its almost an inch difference... but not quite. Thats probably section width and not tread width... but I could be wrong. Check out specs on popular tire brand sites. They always have the tread and section widths in a table.

My baby came with 285's on stock rims when I rescued her from the lot... Perfect fit, cheesy rims. I am all about the aftermarket look. I have 16x7 ALCOA Classic's... very nice, and I got them for $125 a rim. . cheap!!

Yeah. 285s are common, but on the stock 6. 5" wide rims? I bought my last two sets of tires from Les Swabb. they are a very large tire shop in the Northwest. They would not install the 285s on the stock rim. So I assummed it would not be safe to run them that way. I had to sweet talk them into installing the 265s on the stock rims

According to: http://www.csgnetwork.com/tireinfo4calc.html

The 265/75 is 31. 65" tall, 10. 43 wide, and revs 637 times per mile.

The 285/75 is 32. 83" tall, 11. 22 wide, and revs 614 times per mile.

At the engine speed for 70mph on 265's, the 285's would move you at 72. 6 mph.

Actual tire circumference and speed numbers will vary with wear, but this is a good jumping off point.

I'm sure I've seen 285's on 6. 5's, but I have some 8's to put mine on. ;)

My 99 had 285s and no probs at all. the truck was grossly overloaded on a daily basis and the tires did great. i dont really think the 285s should be a problem because of the width. i run 33x12. 50s on my jeep with an 8 inch rim, about the same difference as the 285s on a 6. 5.

Thanks.

I would go with the bigger wheels right now but am spending it on other mods :)

My thinking is I can get American Racing Nitros for $300 total from a Big O owner I know. However, my tires will be gone in a few months. If I just get 285s now and run them on the stock wheel til I can get the 8 inch wheels I will.

You guys running the 285s on stock wheels, who put them on who would not due to safety issues?

Nick

Nick, Yes That was the reason I was given. its a safety Issue. I was told the larger tires put undo preasure on the bead.

The guys running with the larger sizes on the stock rims might be okay but I personally don't want to put myself, passengers, truck or other drivers in danger when I'm pulling a trailer etc. and have a tire blow at highway speeds. It might be okay but --- I will go with the 8" rim.

I have the 285's on my stock wheels as well. The rule of a big name tire shop is if it did not come factory it is not allowed... they say its safety, but a tire is a tire. If they were unsafe they would not be on the road. I think if you went to a mom and pop style tire shop you would get what ever you want put on. Somebody is mounting those 44" tires, they have to be less safe then 285's ever will be.

Yeah you may be right but then again they may have a valid point. I would rather error on the side of caution. I figured they are the pros and should know. Anyway it gives someone an excuse to buy that cool set of rims. There reason was it puts undo preasure on the bead of the tire and in certain situations the tire could pop off the bead. The factory rims aren't designed for the larger sizes. Its like trying to cramb a 600lb. gorilla in a shoe box. That was their analysis

i've mounted 285's on the stock 6. 5 chrome wheel for a couple of customers and the had no problems and were very tickled,,,,,,,, I've got the factory 16x8 alums,,,,,, I did that because i wasnted to stay with factory wheels and i thought the newer one looked better

as far as the narrow rim putting undo stress on the bead i dont believe that is completely true. take for instance when people air down their tires for four wheeling. they say that a narrow rim is less likely to have a tire come off the bead because the tire is actually pushing against the the outside edge of the rim. the wider the rim, the less pressure there is pushing the tire against the rim. follow what im sayin? but hey thats just my $. 02.

I have had 285/75/16 Bf Goodrich all terrains mounted on 6. 5" wide factory chrome rims for 15,000 miles. I to was alittle skeptical at first but went ahead and tried it because I wanted to somewhat fill the fender well. So far I am very pleased, the truck drives great and the tires are wearing even. I run 60 psi in the front and 50 psi in the rear when empty/no trailer. Loaded or towing I raise the rear pressure depending on the weight I'm hauling up to 60 psi.

i also have the 285's on 6. 5 stock rims. running the bfg at ko's. i had them on for over 15000 miles w/o any problems nor due i expect any. due to the small rim i run less psi to get complete thread contact on the road. 47 front and 32 rear. been working for me.

Thanks guys

I am going to talk to the Big O owner that I know. He is the one with the wheels for sale.

I will ask about the 285s and if he woNickn't do it then I will reconsider.

However, by the time I need new tires (few months) I will have the extra cash for wheels and maybe just buy the ones he has. So, it would probably be a maximum of a month running the 285s on the stock wheels.

Thanks for everyone's opinion.

Nick
