I got a issue..... I had really good luck with a set of 235/85R16 Goodyear workhorse extra grips couple years ago now I am looking for new tires again wasnt impressed with the bfg a/ts but I want a bit larger tire like a 285/75R16 I was looking at the Goodyear MT/R's but I was curiouse what you all thought I dont tow much weight nowadays about 8k+ truck about 6kso total gvcw of 14k maybe 15k so not all that heavy. I was just curiouse if you thought I should be ok with the 285's or stick with the 235's? also does anybody have MT/R's on their CTD?the 235 lrE has a weight of 3055 and the 285 lrD has a weight of 3305.

Lotta guys run them offroad and they do OK, expensive in my opinion though.



Get some wider rims first, the factory 6" wide ones don't work very well at all with the wider tires.
 
With 4. 10s, I think I'd go with the 285s. It will slow your engine down a touch, but still pull good. If you are worried about squishy sidewall flex, get wider wheels.

When I put 285 BFG AT/KO's on my factory 6" rims I got an uneven wear pattern across the tread. I went to a little wider rim and problem was fixed.

If I remember right the height of the 285/75 is pretty close to the 235/85, just a tad higher. The big difference is in width. I love my 285's on rocks, in fresh mud or snow, but when I am trying to follow ruts made by someone with regular tires, my wider stance makes the truck a little squirrely as first the left tire is in centered in the rut then the right. I was pushing through deep rutted refrozen snow the first time that happened to me and it sure boosted the adrenaline. :eek:

BTW, I really like the 285 size. I have good clearance and can load the truck and get in without a step.
 
Ok been a while. I got a new truck see sig, looking at 285's again curious how the perform/last when towing?about18k would a try wall make any differance over the 2 ply walls? I am looking at some remington mud brutes. on 16x7's I beleive

i can't speak to towing with the 285's since i don't tow much.



i run 295/75R16 toyo open country a/t tires on my truck. they handle very well on the pavement. it's a whole new truck compared to the 235/85R16s.



i experience the same tracking problems as moab4x4 complained of. sometimes, they are a little too wide for the ruts made by others.



if you go with a 285 or larger you might want a wider than stock rim, as others have mentioned. i went to a boneyard and picked out a set of the nice 16x7 accuride rims that came on some ford pickups... same bolt pattern, way stronger than the stock dodge rims and a potentially cheaper alternative to new rims.

265/75 r16 Load Range E

I use Toyo Open Country H/T 265/75 R16 Load range E, they are just a tad bit higher and a bit wider than the 235's. They work fine on my d250 with 16/ 7" rims, no uneven wear. I think it is hard to find a good Load range E tire (80 psi) a must for towing heavy that is larger than the 265/75 r16s. Michelin has the LTX A/S and M/S tires in 265 75 load range E, but the larger 285s and above go down to load range D, or at least that's what I found... ANYWAY IMHO to sum it up, 265/75r16 load range E tires are the best replacement for the money with stock 6" rims that will work and still maintain Load rating and give you a wider tire. .

I have also used the Michelin LTX A/S 265/75 R16 load range E and they were great hiway tires
