driveline swap what do I need to run the 48RE

Just converted my 99 F350 to Cummins 12V power in 14 days. Pulled the PSD exactly 2 weeks ago, rebuilt the 12V and got it back in and on the road 13 days later. Still have a few kinks to work out, but it sure does run sweet.

I went with FordCummins motor mounts, and their ZF6 bellhousing adapter, SBC's CON FE clutch and tons of performance upgrades. Overall the swap went VERY smoothly. A few parts problems such as the wrong input shaft seal from Ford required me to pull the trans again #@$%! but other than that it was a relatively pain free operation. I used the Dodge alt. and AC unit, with new lines made for the AC to adapt to the Ford setup. I only moved driveline back about 1. 5" so everything fit real well, aside from the fact that I cant run a fan shroud right now. ( need something custom for that) We fab'd up a 4" downpipe, 5" exhaust, used the throttle linkage from a 94 Ford F150, and incredibly all of the mounting holes for the pedal assembly were the same, and the hole for the cable was even in the right spot. Still working out the wiring situation to make all the Ford gauges work correctly. Right now I am running a full set of Autometer gauges to really watch the temp and O. P. , but I want all of the Ford ones to work as well. I havent hooked up the grid heaters or second battery yet, but there is plenty of time for that before winter rolls around. If anyone has any questions about Ford Superduty swaps, feel free to PM me, or post up, I discovered several shortcuts that would make the swap much easier. It sure is sweet to be Cummins powered now. Oo.

With your list of mods, the truck, and conversion pieces I'll bet that you spent "too much money" The 14 days is real impressive. . I'm way passed that and I haven't even pulled the old engine yet. Definately post some pics, I really like the look of the '99 F250/350 trucks made to look even better with a 12v in the engine bay.

I just blew up the 7. 3 in my 99 F450 and am doing a 12V swap with an NV5600. The 7. 3 is out and the NV5600 is sitting here ready to go as is the NV271 T/C with the new input shaft. My motor will be ready this coming weekend then it full speed ahead. I'd love to hear about your shortcuts and I have a couple questions for you. I'll keep searching for the answers but any info you have to share would be great!

-Cruise control: I've heard that it's only 6 wires to hook the 12V cruise control up to the superduty stuff... do u have a list of what wires go where?

-Ford tach: read that it can be used but it requires a tach sensor from an earlier powerstroke... do u have a part number?

-I see ppl are using a push button for the heater grid and the starter. It doesn't seem like it should be too hard to hook up to the stock ignition switch/key... am I missing something?

-is there any reason to leave the stock ECM in the truck? It seems that it wouldn't do anything anymore, unless it happens to run the cruise circuit (but I'm guessing the GEM does that). Did you use the ECM or parts of the stock wiring harness to hook-up your gauges or to trip your alt?

Thanks for the info on the throttle petal. That was one thing that I was wondering about! I'd loved to see some pics of your motor mounts and just some general engine compartment shots too... I'm a visual kinda guy! Oo.

In order to make the cruise control work, you need to get a cruise control servo out of a gas powered Ford truck. Anything from 92 and up should work ok. I can get you the wiring information after I look around a bit, I still havent hooked mine up, but have the information somewhere. The 6 wire part is true, and that is all it takes. The wires can be picked up at the bottom of the steering column, and then spliced into the CC servo.

The tach needs a mount fabbed up to hold a "tach sensor" for a 93 Ford 7. 3 IDI truck, I dont have a PN, but any Ford dealer can get it for around 50 bucks. You need to grind 2 more slots in the damper at the front of the motor, so the tach will work right. Ground one side of the tach sensor, and run the other wire to wires 19 and 21 on the PCM. Itll work perfect.

I left my ECM in because I think the glow plug relay timer and some of the gauges I have might be run through there. I cut wire 1 on the PCM and got rid of the CEL. All of the Ford sensors for the gauges are used on the Cummins motor, so the dash works great. Hooking up the grid heaters should be as simple as getting 2 very heavy relays, and controlling them with the wire that controls the GPR from the PSD.

Use the upper radiator hose from a 99 24V. Just shorten one end up, and it works perfect. As for the bottom, its a combo of hoses and adapters to make it work. I just looked through the Napa Catalog and ordered what looked good to me. Im not sure about the 97 F350 info, sorry. What specifically are you lookin for?

Contratulations on an awesome truck. I'd love to hear that pulling into anybody's parking lot. You're gonna get some looks.....

Thanks, it was a fair amount of work, but definitely worth the results. As for the looks I get..... Its great to pull up next to a PSD truck, have them see the "C" badge on the fender and watch the reaction on their face.

How about a close up of your throttle linkage? I pieced mine together and works fine for now. Honestly it looks cobbled up and Im not sure how well it will last over time. Just looking for other solutions. Also how did you connect the cruise cable to the pump throttle?? Nice conversion!!

I'll get a close up pic of the throttle linkage in the next day or so. When I bought my CC servo from the junkyard, i just got it out of the same truck as the one I got my gas pedal and cable from. The junkyard guys were nice enough to give me the bracket that both the throttle cable and cruise control cable mount to. I had the Dodge throttle cable bracket still bolted to my pump, so I ended up cutting both brackets a little bit, and welding them together. So it bolts up to the injection pump using the Dodge side, but the cables hook in via the Ford side. Kind of hard to explain, but it works well. I havent installed my cruise control yet, but when I do, its just a matter of snapping the cable into place. Pics to follow.....

Sounds good. I had a V10 in my f350 so the cruise servo was already there. I would like to see a diffrent setup to compare to mine. Like I said both the pedal and the cruise is hooked up and works well but I think it could be better in looks and function. Ill wait for the pics, thanks!

im doing a 89 cummins into a 90 f350 i had to switch the vacum pump because of clearence issues with the steering box but now my power steering pump outlet is an inch away from the motor mount and there is no space to connect the hose i dont want to grind into the mount if i dont have to does anyone make a fitting or kit for this any info would be usefull
im using diesel conversion specialists engine mounts
