2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission 2nd / 3rd Gen Power Towing Mirror Swap

Ok, I've got the instructions on how to do this. ( http://www.klenger.net/dodge/2nd-gen-reference/heated-towing-mirrors.html ) A couple questions I have are:



1)I have the 2nd gen non power towing mirrors that came on my truck. Of course I'm planning on using these bases. What other parts will I need, other than the 3rd gen power mirrors? Ie. my truck doens't have the power control joystick.



2) Does anyone have that part # for the control?



3) Any other parts I need other than wire and connectors?

Yes, I'd like to have all the functions of the mirrors including the "heating" option if at all possible. My truck has the capped hole in the door panel for the controller, but no switch. Does anyone have the part # for the control switch? Is this the only other part I'll need other than the mirrors?

The on/off button for the heater circuit is on the heating/AC control panel just below and to the left of the floor/face/defrost selection knob so you will need to get that dash control panel and/or wire up a different switch. The heater is on a timer of some sort so it must have some electronics somewhere. Not sure if those electronics are in the switch itself or controlled by some other mechanism. I'm sure someone who knows more about the heater control circuit will chime in here.

Thanks Deon. That's good to know since I don't have that a/c panel. I'll just get a nice looking rocker switch to mount to control the defrost/heated mirror function. So I guess what I need now is the control for the mirror. Maybe the Dodge dealership can give me the part #, but if anyone has it, I'd be greatful to have it.

I just checked my power mirrir control, part number on the tag is 56021 311 41649



I believe the lock nut and knob are seperate items too.



The switch is about 35. 00

CJ, I've read that if you have electric windows, you'll have the harness in the door for the power mirrors. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, or concur if I'm right.

Im a novice on the wiring on that truck ( not to brag or anything) If you have power windows then the plug is in the door for both the mirror and the mirror adj. switch. you will need to get some new door panel retaining clips. you can get them at the dodge dealer for about $1. 50-$2. 50 each. Or you can get them at www.wurthusa.com for a little ceaper. most parts stores dont have them! The mirror heater switch wiring is already there in the Dash all you need is the a\c heater contol unit witch contains all the timers and relays Ect for the right operation

I think all the trucks come with the wiring. On my 2000, I did not have the electric mirrors. When I converted to the 03 electric tow mirrors I had to purchase the mirror position switch and heat funtion switch. I was kinda suprised when I hooked up the wires that they already had power and no fuses or relays needed to be installed.

The switch, nut, and nob are separate parts.

You should have the wiring in the door.



Does anyone have a diagram on how to hook up the wiring. I think I tried every possible combination but can't get my mirrors sychronized. The pass side works fine but drivers side is 90 degrees off. I'll eventually get used to it but it is a bit annoying.

It's easy to get them mixed up, there's actually position switches in the mirrors so that it "knows" whether they're flipped up or down, that way the knob always works the same, ie. up is always up. It's easy to figure out with a voltmeter and either a little battery charger or even better some jumper clips to clip to your factory wires and pre-test.



Just make sure when you're testing the mirror functions, you're holding the mirror as it would be mounted on the truck. I did the same thing, tested them with the mirrors both flipped down, but laying on their backs and had one backwards mirror and one correct, really weird and confusing to operate that way, but after a little wire switcheroo all worked well.



It will work correctly, keep working at it, you'll get it, and love it

Got the part numbers at home

My dealer was really good at getting the switch, AC control, and nut. I just pretended it was factory power mirror equipped instead of manual tow.



The money you spend on the HVAC control is well worth it. The relay and timer control functions are all in there. The funny part is, when I pulled the non-mirror one out, the mirror heat connector was "plugged in" to the empty cavity (no terminals)on the back! I didn't even have to search for it.

Really good pics, which I need to study more. I am looking at doing this also, but I already have electric and heated standard mirrors on my 01. Do I need to do any modifing of switches or am I good to go with what I already have?

No, you don't have to modify any switches or anything like that. Just convert the mirror heads, and wire them into your existing mirror wiring in the door. I don't have the color codes, maybe someone here does, but it's pretty easy to do with a voltmeter and trial/error. Just remember, if you're playing with them off the truck, make sure they're oriented correctly as they'd be installed, before trying to identify wires. Piece of cake, and well worth it.

will fit into a '95? I did the swap earlier this year. I wired up the mirrors but did not connect the heat portion yet. I ran wires in the truck but hadn't decided on a switch yet. I think that the mirror switch on this panel would be nice.

Just clarifying: 3rd gens can be had with electric towing mirrors? Thats what this swap is? My 2nd gen has power but i need towing mirrors but refuse to give up power. If 3rd gens have what i am after... .

Yes, third gens have power tow mirrors, they don't directly fit 2nd gens. To make them fit, one must take the bases from the 2nd gen manual tow mirrors and swap them with the bases on the 3rd gen power tow mirrors.
