2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission 2nd / 3rd Gen Power Towing Mirror Swap

OK... I have a question for you guys that have done the swap from standard power mirrors to tow power mirrors. I have a 2000 that came with the standard mirrors. I just purchased the non powered mirrors and installed them with the intention of finishing the swap later when I get a little more cash (about 280. 00 I guess from what I have seen on ebay). Anyway, I was going to leave the adjuster in the door and just hook up the wires later, but found the top stud from the mirror hits the mirror adjustor. Anyone else have this problem. I am wondering if it is because I have a truck that they did not offer towing mirrors for and changed the adjuster knob after they started offering the other mirrors? Anyway, I ended up removing the knob and wiring from the door so the panel would fit flush to the door again. Any pics of your guys mirror knobs with the wiring attached? Thanks. By the way... . the mirrors do look good! I haven't had a chance to drive the truck yet, but will in the morning. Thanks for all the help and the pictures.

Has anyone bought from Wyatt Arp Dodge or seen lower prices? I had to put the part numbers in their website search to get the prices. They also sell on E-Bay, but if you use a credit card they send you off E-Bays site to the store.

I managed to get the stock switch assembly to fit with the tow mirrors and the reinforcing plate. Some have filed or ground down the switch a bit and have had success. What I did on mine was to place the reinforcing plate on my anvil and pound in the raised area around the upper stud with a ball peen hammer. Take care not to distort the shape of the plate. Just mash the raised area in. It doesn't need to be flat and will probably look concave a bit. Then, find a thinner nut that fits the stud and use it instead of the stock nut that has the raised washer type thingy on the one side. I did not use a lock washer in order to reduce the overall thinkness. Tighten it up, and then grind the end of the stud down with your 4" grinder. I gound mine flat against the nut and then a bit more. My stock switch touches, but fits fine. You may want to wait to do this until you are ready to make the final mounting of the finished power mirrors as with the stud this short it will probably be more difficult to start the nut on the stud.

I bought both the 2nd Gen non powered tow mirrors and the 3rd Gen powered tow mirrors from Wyatt Arp Dodge. Worked for me with no problems. I now have a set of 3rd Gen non powered tow mirrors I am going to sell. I am keeping the 2nd Gen powered tow mirrors. How did that happen?

I also just bought a set of the 3rd gen power mirrors from wyatarp dodge. fast shipping and mirrors look great. No distortion or any flaws that i can see like mentioned above. I did the buy it now offer off of ebay. looking forward to the conversion. I constantly find myself with my factory mirrors flipped in and cussing cause i cant see around the trailer. It is just too damn hard to adjust my mirrors. Some have complained about the 2nd gen tow mirrors not holding their position. I have the opposite problem, the mirrors are so tight, i worry every time i reposition them that the glass is going to break.

Yep, mine were tight too. So tight in fact that after adjusting them after flipping the old mirrors out that the mirror just fell off when I walked away. It was kind of a good thing though. It was the motivation to go ahead and order the new power mirrors... ... what a great mod this is!

LOL maybe i should go adjust them so they will break. Tired of looking at the mirrors sitting in the box on the garage floor, but just too dang busy to do the swap right now. I dont have any towing planned for a little while anyway. I know once i do the conversion, i am going to kick myself for not doing it sooner.

I live about 45 min from Wyatt Arp Dodge, and have bought my 2nd set of the towing mirrors... Their prices are for real, and they are great people to deal with! Just thought I would throw that in... . I was kind of skeptical at first when I saw their prices, but when I got over there, I was told they order pallets of the mirrors at a time, so that is how they get them so cheap... See what the shipping co$ts are, and I will see if it is cheaper for me to ship them. . may be able to save y'all a few bucks!!

ok any secret as to how to get the stupid retainer clip off. . ?? Those little tabs are not wanting to move at all - Bent a couple small scredrivers and broke the tip off one already. .

It's not EZ. I broke only one screwdriver. I also used a nail punch and a awl. Pry a little at each tab. Just keep going around and around, but keep the rag through the hole. Once it lets go... ... . wet pants time. :--)

I bought a new Craftsman small screwdriver and sacrificed it for the good of the project. It had the square shaft to put a small Crecent wrench on to do the twisting. It bent the tip some but never broke. My other small screw broke instantly, Vermont American.

I would tap the screwdriver in with the wrench to give it a slight bit more grab, twist as far I could, then do the other side of the same tab. You can then get another screwdriver in the middle and really pry the tab out till you see a gap between it and the housing. This way you KNOW which tabs are still holding you back from the big bang! I used a chisel to knock the tabs back in position when ready to replace them.

How important are the black washers under the lock ring ?? mine are cracked or broken, and I really don't see why they are needed

As far as I can tell they are to reduce friction between the spring and lock washer/ring thus allowing the spring to not turn when the mirror pivots on the base. Normally when the mirror pivots, the lock washer/ring and plastic bushing, which usually breaks when disassembling the mirrors, would turn under the spring which allows the spring to not turn and cause the mirror to pivot more smoothly. Without the bushing, the friction between the spring and lock washer/ring is greater so the spring will try to turn with the lock washer/ring when the mirror pivots. This is all just my opinion. I have been running mine for some time now without the bushing without any problem. I used grease on both ends of the spring before I reassembled mine so the mirror still pivots smoothly even with the spring turning with the mirror head and lock washer/ring. I hope this helps.

They help the mirror fold in smoother if you hit something with it. Mine are in the same condition and it still works fine.
