2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Power Towing Mirror Conversion

Update,30 minutes on the phone with Wyatt Earp, they said that the mirror I have covers power heated mirrors from 02-current. *uck!Looks like no power heated tow mirrors, just the manual. Anybody out there selling a set of 05 power heated tow mirrors let me know.

When I did my swap last year, I bought the new set of mirrors for the 2nd gen from wyatt earp. I bought the 3rd gens from private sellers on ebay. I also bought another 2nd gen from a private party on ebay. Of the three from private sellers, two I had knowingly purchased damaged on the back of the mirror heads themselves.

When I did the swap, I was able to remove the mirror motor and mirror from a 3rd gen damaged power head and then screw it right into a 2nd gen mirror head after installing that head onto a 2nd gen arm. The 2nd gen head that I put it into was older than the ones I bought from wyatt earp.

One the other side, I changed it at the pivot where the arm folds back. My point is that on the ones that I had, I didn't just use the hinge where the arms fold back, I also used the pivot where the mirrors folded out to make my swap. I don't know about the newer ones, but take a look, you may be able to do it there.

I'm trying to find a friend or anyone that may have a 05 with the tow, power, heat mirror that wouldn't mind swapping out with may 06 tow, power, heat mirror. I think my chances are slim to none. I'll probably have to just go with my 01 manual tow mirror.

Man, that is too bad. I guess in the future anyone dong this needs to order 03-05 mirrors. Hate you had the problem but great of you to post it so that others in the future don't. Good luck getting your situation remedied.

Surfbeetle,

If I understand correctly, the 3rd gen power mirror inards will fit into a 2nd gen non power tow mirror head, no problem. Does the wiring run inside of the 2nd gen arm, just like the 3rd gen? If this is true, it sounds like you have come up with an easier way to do the swap. .

I don't currently have a set of either mirrors to look at, how do you remove the mirror, etc. Please elaborate. .

Okay, on mine, I was able to run the wires down the arm just like the 3rd gens. Here is the rub, on the earlier set of 2nd gens, I was able to remove the mirror out using a small torx (its been so long they were either allen or torx) bit and unscrew the 2nd gen mirror and its pivoting mechanism from the head. It was a tedious slow process as I did not want to damage anything.

On the new 2nd gen mirror, Dodge started to glue the mechanisms into the mirror head and it was not removable as far as I can tell. As for the 3rd gen, I had mirrors that had damaged heads on the back and I could take them apart and salvage the parts that I wanted because of that.

Another suggestion would be to contact an autobody shop and see if they have any broken but salvagable parts.

What I had ordered is the 03-current(06)mirror,there is no 03-05 unfortunately!Right now I hoping to find a good person with a 03-05 power, heat, tow mirror willing to swap for my brand new 06 Mopar power, heat, tow mirror. Any volunteers. You guys that did before 06 I hate you. J/K

I guess that now the only thing you can do aside from the junkyard, bodyshop route is to go into a dealership parts dept and spend some time with the parts person and lookup what part number was for the 03-05 mirror. Their parts computer will be able to tell you the current part number and the one that it superceded. Once you have that number, you can then look for the mirrors that you need on ebay or at other dealerships, they should even be able to tell you who has that part number in stock. You never know what kind of NOS (new old stock) they have laying around. In my opinion, if you can at least get the passenger side done in a power mirror, you will have all of the benefits of conversion. While it is a pain to adjust the driver's mirror by hand, its a heck of alot worse when you have to do the other side or worse yet get your wife to do it for you! :-{}

I thought about that but the part# is the same 82207298 or something like that. I'm not going to take apart more than I have already done(swapping internals). I'm going to be stuck with manual mirrors. I could try the needle in the hay stack and call around to different Dodge dealers and hope they might have a set of 03-05 mirrors, but will the price be the same as Wyatt Earp?Probably not. So far I have to much time and money for nothing. Sorry about the negative vibe, but that is what I'm left with. Still looking for anyone that wants to swap!

Damn,I finally got this swap done! After months of trying to find someone with the correct mirrors that would swap out with the 06 mirrors I had,I would have gone with the manual mirror. But now with all said and done they are sweet. Thanks for the wiring schematic. That made life much easier. Thanks to all at TDR!

Ok, I have the wiring chart that was listed above, but I have one question. One of the wires in the mirriors are solid black and the other one is black/silver. Which black wire goes to the black/green and which one goes to the blue/yellow?

Thanks for the help,

Ben

So to clarify, the new 03+ power/heated tow mirrors available from Wyatt Arp are NOT compatible for the swap on a 2nd gen? I purchased the 2nd gen tow mirrors from them in anticipation of recovering the power/heat feature in the future (I had the power/heat non-towing mirrors stock). I'm just reading up on the details and from what I gathered in this post the current 3rd gen mirrors are not compatible for the swap. :(

Diggin up an old one here. I have some power tow mirrors off an 06 truck, from what I understand they will not match up to the bases of my stock 01 tow mirrors and confirmed this by holding them up next to eachother, before I go through the swap has anyone converted them with the new style mirrors? does it look stupid as heck or is it not too noticeable? Also, how hard would it be to just swap the mirror heads (in the flipper part) I see they are glued on but if you could "unglue" them can they be converted that way?

Man this is nice once your done. I installed a set on my 2002 this year alot of guys see these ask if it's factory. . Should have been.

Quick note if using the OEM Dodge mirrors for the conversion. There has been a change to the mirrors and they no longer will work for the conversion.

What has happened is that the original power mirrors that were an "AM" part number have been superseded by new mirrors with an "AO" part number. The new mirrors (AO) fit through the 09 model year as well as the 3rd gen trucks. However the bases from the 2nd gen non-power mirrors no longer will work with the new AO superseded part number mirrors. They look close but will not work. You can pick out the new style AO mirrors by the metal at the break away junction, if it is silver (unpainted) then it is an AO series, if it is black it is an AM series. You can really only see that metal junction if you pivot the break away.

I have gotten mirrors pulled from local dealerships with the old AM series to make my conversion work but you will have to work with your local parts man to make that happen.

Good Luck.
