Wife and I headed out yesterday morning for a day trip to the Georgia swampland. Taking off from a stop light in Jacksonville we heard a gear grinding sound coming from down under somewhere. Na, that’s not my truck as we both noticed a beater looking car moving out on my right side. At the next light I felt it! When the automatic shifted from 1st to 2nd it made a sound that is described in my service manual as “growling, grating, or scraping noises”. The Temp gage was at 140 deg. (normal) and it only did this noise going into second gear. Coming down in gears is ok, and I can back up fine. I have never had to do major work on the transmission. I plan on looking at the fluid tomorrow for debris in oil. I have never had the bands adjusted and the truck is now at 116k miles. Can you all come back with some info or point me to some threads of others who have had this going on with their transmission. Thank you TDR members.

If it grinds only in second gear it could be a problem with the front planetary gear set, like the torrington bearing right there. If you see any metal fragments when you pull the pan you will want to get that trans out of there and get it fixed. Waitining will only do more damage, and might leave you sitting someplace.

Thanks for the reply joe. Being over turkey days all I did was open the tech book, looked at a lot of TDR threds and asked more questions. the truck has not moved! I will be calling places to upgrade tomorrow because i have to agree with you in thinking it is those plant gear trains. Man this is going to be an expensive christmas! Ken
