I'm finally getting around to buying an exhaust brake. I am a little confused by some of the advertising claims on various controllers. I'm putting in a different valve body so it will lock up in 2nd.

When using a controller like a BD Autolock, does 2nd have to be switched to manually? There info indicates that only the Torqloc or there programmable one will do 2nd, but I am not sure if the mean automatically.

DTT does not have too much info that I can find on their product, but says it will do second.

Which of these controllers unlock and lock again during shifts?

The next question would be what are the advantages/disadvantages to using one of these versus just the plain mystery switch?

Thanks in advance

With the mystery switch one can lock-up the TC when doing so may cause damage, for example when slowing to a halt. The Autoloc will only lock and unlock when it is good practice so to do. If you never make mistakes, perhaps this is not an issue. ;) Also, of course, with an automatic controller, there is one less switch to operate when exhaust brake decelleration is required. It's a "fit and forget" option.

as long as your vavle body has been changed to alow for loc up in second I have hts vavle body and I can loc in first on my auto but not advised to do I have the bully dog toque locker on my truck in sig. and you can adjust it to engage anywhere from 20 to 40 mph 30 to 40 is good for driving every day mine is at 25 since I drag race. but it locks up when it hit the speed you set it at and unlocks when it drop down to the same speed plus if you want you can switch it off to have transmission work normally.

DTT transmission controller

Mine's setup to allow for 2nd gear exhaust only when manually downshifting to 2nd. Fred Swanson set it to disengage @20mph in 2nd. Great setup but with Ca vehicle sets off perpetual CEL. Black electrical tape minimizes visual blight.

I also would like to know which controller will automatically unlock then relock the TC when the transmission shifts gears.

I said above in my earlier reply the "_bully dog torque locker--" engages TC at the speed you set it from 20 to 40 and the unlocks the TC when the truck slows down to just under that speed setting and at the same time allows the truck to shift up and down and every kickdown when you are doing 50 and still stay locked the whole time hope that helps.

Josparkz, Thanks I'll look into that one.

KingS, Thanks, but I'm looking for a unit that will automatically unlock then relock the TC when a gear shift occurs no matter what speed/rpm the truck is running at. I have the Goerend Brothers transmission upgrades and they suggest not shifting while the TC is locked. Especially with the power mods I'm putting on.

The ATS commander gives you the option to keep the converter lock or unlock during shifts, this feature is set with dip switches. Lockup speed is also adjustable on the fly - VERY easy to use. Very nice if you need to decrease

If wired up, it can also control the exhaust break. The only function it performs is turning the break off once the TC unlocks to avoid generating extra heat in the TC (excess slip). For morning warm ups (sitting in the driveway), just turn the commander off and your exh brake turns on. Very cool feature!

My BD Autoloc engages in 2nd gear, ... I've never tried 1st... in 2nd gear, it pulls down so quickly, you get an ice cream headache... . iut's also my understanding that most, if not all controllers unlock the TC during shifts... .
