I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with this 2000 4wd 2500 auto shifting in and out of second gear. When I'm driving, it shifts up to second and gets stuck in second. When you take the shifter and drop it out of D and put it into 2 and back to D it shifts fine. However, if you're too heavy on the foot it tends to drop back in second. Also, if you let it shift up to second and let off the accelerator it will go into third with no problem and once at cruise it's fine. What could be the cause of this? Thanks in advance.

It's usually the govenor solenoid and gov. pressure sensor. You might have some debris floating around in the fluid causing the gov to stick. You can try changing those out first and while your in there see if there's any metal on the magnet. If the magnet looks like a porcupine you have problems. Some metal stuck to it is normal.

59Turbo,

Yes sir, you are correct it appears to be the govenor pressure sensor. I pulled a valve body out of my 98' and put it in the 2000 and it worked. However, it only works with the computer box from the 98'... If you try using the 98' valve body with the 2000 computer box it won't permit the torque converter to lock up. On the flip side, if you try using the 98' computer box in the 2000 truck the instrument cluster goes haywire. So the way I see it, the best lessons are learned from trial and error.

Thank for your inputs and I'm in progress towards changing the gov. sensor.
