I live in the Sacramento, Caloifornia area, and it regularly passes 100*F most days here in the summer. I use two things to keep my dash from cracking:

Even though we're well up north I'd say we're a hot climate since our avg. summer temps are close to Sacramento (see 100+ quite a bit) and our winters are somewhat mild (rarely get down to 0). I've owned 4 second Gens and haven't ever had a cracked dash, bit I always use a sunshade because it seems like lunacy to not to use one in the summer.

Eleven years in Southern California, no cracks. I put a carpet dash cover on it when it was 2 months old and I use a reflective window shade whenever I park the truck.

My 98 has a perfect dash. Spent six & a half years in Texas and the last couple in Oregon. I baby it by always keeping it in the shop, except for when I am traveling. When in AZ. I keep the sun shade up and the windows down an inch. I have the plastic outer window shades to help keep the dust and rain out.

My 01 sets outside the garage where it's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Hasn't cracked yet, but I'm sure after reading this thread I'm jinxed for sure. LOL

Cracked Dash

I have an 01' with a crack going in front of the driver from the steering wheel to the windshield. I live on a dirt road in central Ga. , but no off roading!

i live near the beach in so cal, so the temp is not my prob. bouncing in the desert has made my dash retire and move on to a better life.

Why didn't you include a "Didn't/or hasn't cracked yet Vote? Mine is still intact. Could it be that it is almost always in the garage?

1998 has no cracks. I'm in NJ so it's hot/humid in the summer, and relatively mild in the winter.

It's gotten no special treatment.

Eric

Does anyone know the price on a replacement dash top (not a cover, but a replacement) either factory or aftermarket as long as it fits? Mine is cracked all over. Looks pretty bad.

I noticed that a few new threads have been posted lately on the 2nd Gen dash cracking again. The poll in this thread has had 32 owners fill out the poll with cracks and 15 owners responded in the text post with no cracks, since that option couldn't be selected.

According to the poll Gary - K7GLD posted on 4-16-2006 asking how many 24 valve truck owners there were, he recieved 242 owners. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156377

Keep in mind that 2gen runs back to 1994 12 valves for the dash poll.

If you have a 2gen that has had a cracked dash and something has been done about it, by you or someone else. Please participate in the poll https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155405&highlight=cracked+dash

Ran across this while looking for a thread on dash covers. My truck was a "never cracked" until a couple of months back, then one day while driving along there was a loud pop and presto a gaping crack in front of the steering wheel going straight to the windshield. On cool mornings it is about 1/16" wide, when the sun has been on it awhile it will draw up until the crack is nearly invisible. The dash plastic is a lot thicker than I expected, it must be under considerable expansion stress / torsion from body flex in order to crack it. These aren't simple cracks from sunlight embrittling a thin layer of plastic like in the old days when the dash pads were foam with a thin vinyl sheet.

I am very depressed about my truck lately. The engine and transmission are still in top-notch shape, but the old gal is just dissolving all around me. The no-good snake-licking dirt-eating evaporator drain is clogged up AGAIN #@$%!, the overhead bin light broke loose and shoved up inside the last time I poked it to turn it on, and just this week my headlight switch caught on fire. At this rate in a couple of more years I'll be driving down the road on a rusting frame sitting on a upturned 5-gallon bucket held in place with baling wire. :{ :( :(

My 95 was 7 yrs old & 198000 miles when I sold it. The dash was fine. My 02 has 86000 miles on it & my dash cracked. With having my gauges on the dash it will be fun to change it. It's staying like it is for a long time. Just something else to fix on this truck. Jeff

Have a 97 with 125K on it. Outside all the time in Reno... hot in summer, cold in winter, dry all the time. No cracks at all. I do use a sun shade in the summer and crack the windows.

Mine cracked about 6 months ago. Kalifornia had some very hot weeks this year. Mine will also stay like it is for awhile.
