I STILL LOVE IT !!!!!!!!! Just turned 250,000 miles last week. It even has two factory u-joints in it.

I have replaced :

2 Vp's

1 lift pump

1 thermostat

1 water pump

2 batteries

Rebuilt the alternator

11 sets of tires

7 sets of front rotors

1 set of rear rotors

Rebuilt the front driveshaft at 212000

1 rear u-joint

1 Blower motor

1 blower fan resistor

2 wiper motors

A hand full of light bulbs

Dozens of oil / fuel filter changes

2 shift solenoids

1 shift transducer

I dont think I've had to do much to her.

Still need to change the Diff's and brake fluids.

In fact, it was Nowel Thomas (HVAC) that broke me into the diesel bug and got me to join the local Ram Runner's club.

Speaking of HVAC the VP44 on his '98. 5 aka Red Rocket survived all his performance experiments & upgrades and many trips to the track, and after he was gone Hoss ran it hard over and over again until the motor was finally done for and Hoss switched to P-pump power.

I am just interested in knowing how many members purchased 2nd Gen 24valve new and still have their trucks, and their thoughts regarding their trucks. Thanks very much 6naline01

I have my 2001. 5 2500 QC 4x4 that I bought new with 13 miles on it back in 7/01. Truck has been great and I drive it everyday. Did have to replace a couple of lift pumps (Now I have a FASS) and had to replace a VP44 at 45k miles, but it was underwarranty (no problems with the VP the following 70K). One set of upper ball joints and one set each of front and read brake pads, both batteries replaced with optima's 6 years ago and they are still going strong. Other than that I have had alot of good luck with mine (other than the typical front door rot issues,).

Vaughn,

You and I both know that HVAC had the mother of all VP44's. ;) I remember the day that Nowel took the guys at Cummins West on a test drive and I think that all but one of them wet his pants. :-laf

Bought mine in June of 02, I would be happy if it were the last truck I ever had to buy. I have replaced one VP44, just had the ball joints and track bar replaced today, along with all 4 sets of brake pads, also had a valve go bad in the transmission. I am just under 89K miles, and still love this truck as much as the day I bought it. Looked at 2010s this weekend, didn't do anything for me, then I looked at the sticker, wow, don't think I will ever be able to afford that. Someday i hope to have the extra cash to do some mods, would love to upgrade the fuel system, and someday the transmission and TC, then I could do a couple of power mods. Great truck, and it is paid for.

Summer 02. 93k, DTT transmission, major fuel mods (DTT mechanical fuel pump, draw straw II, boat fuel level sensor (fuel cannister fuel pickup and level sensing long gone), fuel coolers, all fuel lines replaced with larger lines, fuel pressure controlled by spring loaded inline valves, RACOR fuel filter, CANNON final fuel filter, "cooling fuel" returned to the tank filler neck), HTT turbo, oil bypass filter, AFE cone air filter, exhaust brake, APPS (TPS) removed years ago replaced with a Cummins bus APPS and a micro switch from Radio Shack. Dodge replaced VP44 once.

Runs good and RELIABLE now. Pull 13k 5er easily. Good mpg. Cab needs fabric redone.

Been paid for quite a few years now :)

4 lift pumps

3 crank sensors

2 injection pumps (1 had computer go bad after 3k miles)

2 backup light switches

4 ball joints

2 track bars

1 pwr steer pump

1 pwr steer gearbox

all steer linkage

right front speaker

1 rear main seal & pan gasket

1 alternator

1 starter solenoid rebuild

seat motor rebuild

now 5-6th syncros going out

This piece of junk is my last Dodge. My 1st gen has had no problems in 250K miles.

1999 Dodge 2500 Quad Cab, Shortbox, 5sp. bought in Dec of 1998. It has 72,000 miles on it. Had the computer re-flashed at the dealership first 6 months... . never been back since. Use it for highway travel and pulling trailers on occasion... . 30 ft 5th wheel, 34 ft Avion, 28 ft Toy Hauler. Have Isspro guages. boost, pyro, fuel pressure. Fass lift pump moved back by the tank, last 2000 miles. Magna flow 4 inch exhaust 20,000 miles ago... K&N filter first 10,000 miles. Second set of Michelin LTX 10ply tires... . second set of batteries. . Rancho shocks first 10,000 miles. Will be putting some injectors and Edge EZ on it this summer. I get between 20 and 22 miles to the gallon on the hwy... . 13 to 14 pulling trailers... . overall I couldn't be happier with the truck... . Cummins are the best.

Bought my 2002 new in July of '02. It has been my daily driver ever since. 126,xxx miles and counting. I love this truck! It is not without some bone headed designs by Dodge that we all know about, but I just fix things that break (upgrading them when possible) and get rust spots fixed when they pop up. Lots of preventative maintance and improvement parts (like DSS, rock solid bushing,... ).

My only regret is not knowing about the TDR sooner, it would have saved me lots of money.

I purchased my 02 new 7/12/2002. Had to get it before the the body change.

Today the truck is like new with about 68,000 miles. With the changes Dodge has done this is definitely a keeper! This is the longest I've ever owned a truck and it is still a pleasure to drive.

Besides installing desired mods listed in signature:

Had the 47RE ATS modification done under warranty with 10,215 miles, in 2004.

Had the VP44 IP replaced under warranty 8/2006 w/ approx 36,000 miles, and installed a Walbro 392 transfer pump along with a fuel gauge.

Replaced the 4 tires at approx 58,000 miles.

Current project is making my Warn Winch #8274 mountable to the rear receiver.

My 01. 5 I bought new in Feb 02, and just turned over 377,000. I LOVE this truck, and will probably drive it another 300,000 miles... ... ... ...

I ordered my '01 HO in January of 2000 and received it that March. I've got 136k on the clock and have had to do lots of work on it (Moog front end, injection pump, 5 lift pumps, rear end, etc. etc. ). Though the quality and service of the Chrysler brand is failing in my opinion, I still love the truck and am truly happy with the Cummins. I'll probably keep it for years to come now that I have it pretty much the way I want it. If I had to replace it for some reason, I'd probable go with the Ford F550 crew cab as the 3500 is a little underweight for my cabover.

I bought my first Dodge-Cummins, an '01. 5 3500 QC with six speed manual and 3. 54 gear in June '01. I pulled my own conventional Airstreams/Avion then later, a big heavy Travel Supreme fifth wheel. I started transporting with it in Jan '05 when it had 150k miles on it and by March '06 it had 325k miles. My daughter and son-in-law still own it for only light duty occasional use with about 350k on it. I replaced very few parts on it, never had a breakdown, and it still performs great.

It made me a faithful Dodge-Cummins owner. I bought and ran an '06 3500 QC drw w/48RE 230k miles in less than two years and now own an '08 3500 C&C with 80k.

I wouldn't buy anything else.

The day I bought our 3500 was a great day. The next day I became my own warranty station and never looked back. It's kinda like a boat - a hole in the water where you throw your money. It's been one project after another and now I have so much "invested" I wouldn't even think about selling it. And so far, it hasn't disappointed me. It's a bit disheartening to learn that some have had major problems, but we all bought the Cummins and the Dodge was just part of the deal. But then again I loved the look of the Rams when they changed the look from a "pickup" to a "real" truck. It still looks cool. Twin turbos or an air ride suspension might be a cool next "project. " ;)

P. s. Why does the spell checker on this forum insist on spelling Cummins - Cummings. I would have thought that would have been fixed by now.

Sold my 2002 With no regrets and don't miss it :-laf
