BKeller, I too would recommend an exhaust brake. In my opinion, it's the best addition one could put on a truck (mine is a BD). If any new truck owner asks me what they should add first, I always suggest they put on an exhaust brake. My truck has almost 90,000 miles on it, and I'm still on the original brakes, and there's still plenty left (my truck is a 5-speed, though, not an automatic, and I don't tow my trailer very often).

A co-worker of mine has a 5-speed 3500, and he tows a big horse trailer with it. He complains about brake fade coming down the mountain passes. I keep telling him he needs an exhaust brake, and he says, "Yeah, I know". He's a truck driver, so he knows how helpful a Jake Brake is on the big rigs. Once he does get one, he'll probably be wishing he would have installed it years ago.

Your assumptions are probably correct...

Exhaust brakes are not a primary stopping

device. But they can greatly help reduce

brake loads and prolong brake life.

I also found that bleeding more often AND

changing the power steering fluid also helped.

On my year truck the power steering pump

is also the pump for the brake boost.

Things improved (just slightly) when I

changed to the Synth. fluid. There was

another post about that in the forum.

I have been hesitant about the steel braided

hoses. The ones that I had on the RX-7 were

tefelon inside and were not rated below

say 20oF because of they could crack. This

was generally not a problem here on the west

coast.

I will take a look at the line.

I did love the feel of the braided hose.

They took out a lot of spungely feel from the pedal.
