I've been having this wacky idea of using a 2nd generation, stock exhaust system as a basis for building a high-performance 1st generation exhaust... Your replies will help me to realize just how wacky this idea is... These are my reasons why this seems at least worthy of consideration:

1. Seems to be bigger than stock 1st gen. system:

- I have never had an opportunity to measure, but from the stock 2nd gen RAMs I have seen, it looks pretty "beefy"... Does anyone know what the stock 2nd gen exhaust size is?... How about the ISB-equipped trucks - bigger yet?

2. They seem super-close to the right contour so depending on how you do the job, you may be able to make it mostly a bolt-on deal.

3. They are made from 403 stainless of a reasonably heavy gage:

- I can't say this is the case for sure, but I thought I saw this posted in another forum some time ago... Someone with more experience on this please comment... I have seen quite a few 1st gen aftermarket exhausts that aren't even stainless!!

4. Seems like a good balance between size increase and quiet operation (if you're into that sort of thing :) )

- This is important if you like trying to max out your power while keeping the truck fairly quiet - I know its a balancing act, but I live in a populated area and I like to arrive places not having my ears ringing. :D

5. (The best reason of all)

- Look how available they are! ... . With the number of ISB boys (and girls) who are getting the monster 4" systems, it seems like you could talk one of them into selling you their old system at a pretty good price. . After all, you are helping them out by uncluttering their garage of old parts! :-laf

Ok, I know there is a lot of speculation in the above (I told you it was a wacky idea)... . I'm hoping someone who knows more about this will comment so I can either put the idea to rest for good, or start looking for the pieces.

Thanks, Rob

The 2G systems are 3" to the converter 3. 5" after converter and down to 3" again after the muffler (I think) until the last 18" of tailpipe. I'm in Chicago for the next 2-3 weeks If you want to see a Banks system on a 92 w250.

Thanks for the info... . Where did you get a Banks system for your 1st gen? ... All I see Banks for these days is the 2nd+ gens.

Recently, I have been considering having a muffler shop make a 4" system... . Even with non-mandrel bends, the 4" should flow better than the stock system.

Thanks for the offer! ... . However, I am in a far suburb of the city - I'd hate to take you that far out of your way.

I'm also in a far suburb; Roselle in fact. I am bored out of my mind for these next 2 weeks. I also have a BC timing tool to find TDC and set timing.

Banks does sell the exhaust systems for 1G trucks still. I think it's about 700$ from turbo back. I am going to be removing mine and selling it in the near future and go to a custom 4" system from Pinnicale Performance (Jerry Jardine) when I get back to WY. I agree with you about non-mandrel bends with a 4" vs stock.
