I did a search and found the question asked several times But no answer. Has anyone put a 2nd gen rad in a 1st gen truck? Yah I know they have plastic end tanks but that can be fixed with a custom rad. Any thoughts? Shadrach

I dont see why you cant install a second gen. rad. but you'll have to put in a second gen intercooler also. a first gen intercooler is to small to fit over that radiator. do a search on the intercooler install, there was a pretty indepth post on it here not to long ago. good luck, Brian

Shadrach,

Funny you should ask, the other thread I had running about the second gen intercooler is because my first gen one is not fitting around my second gen rad ;). So yes it can be done, some of the core support strength ribbing will need to be cut, battery needs to be moved, coolant bottle is interfearing.....

Can it be done, yes, but it is a tight fit! Oo.

I plan on mounting dual batteries in the box. I figured if I have to cut up the rad saddle for a CAC I may as well use a bigger rad, although I don't like the plastic end tanks so I will have to have one custom made. Do you have any suggestions or picture of how to ( or how not to ) do it? Shadrach

Not yet. I will hopefully start hacking this weekend. I had also come to the same conclution, if you modify for one, you modify for the rad and the CAC.

As for the plastic end tanks, I figgures if it worked for so many years on the 2nd gens, it should work fine for my project. If they had that many issues with the plastic tanks, it never would have lasted so long.....

Also for the cost aspect, I figgure $200 vs $1100 for a unit with aluminum end tanks, for the extra $900 alot can be done. In my case, the Horton Fan Clutch.
