2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission 2nd Gen Tow Mirrors

Need help... Does anyone have a set of 3rd Gen Towing Mirrors re-engineered for 2nd Gen, power and heated? OR, has anyone used an aftermarket set that they would recommend? I have been looking for a set to try and re-eng, but from what threads I have been reading they are changed now and would take a lot of work or won't work.

I bought a set of CIPA mirrors for my 99 and they are great. Much larger than the small stock ones and don't vibrate any more than the OEMs either, even extended. Worked great towing a 20+5 deck over gooseneck.

They work well and keeping the power/heat is nice. Install was about 20 minutes per side.

I have a set of POWERVISION mirrors that are just collecting dust in my shop that are approx 3 years old. I have no use for them. If you want them pm me for details.

housings

Does anyone know who made the molds and injection molded the mirror housings for the 2nd gen tow mirrors?

The inside is stamped with a part number 710856, material designation ASA, and MMS, that i think might be the tool shop or molder.

I originally thought maybe this was built by HS Die in Michigan.

Yup, it seems like a lot of work to swap the 3rd gens to the 2nd gen mounts and all that, just to save a few bucks. unless you get all the parts for cheap, its not worth my time for me. The CIPAs look fine to me. The 3rd Gens look good, but not $100 better.

i have both sets to do the swap for sale

I have both sets of mirrors to do the swap. I bought the new mirrors from the dealer 2 years ago (sept 12 2005) and the old non power on ebay. I started to do swap but never got to it. I just traded my 2002 in on a 2007 last week. The invoice for the new mirrors was $296. 44 and about $150 for old mirrors which you just use bases. I will sell everything for $300 plus freight.

What is it about the 3rd gens that make guys wanna retrofit them to a 2nd gen rather than the CIPAs or other aftermarkets? Do they extend out like the CIPAs & the powervisions?

Ramzilla- reason I wanted to go with 3rd Gen was that I had an 05 and those mirrors are big and they flip up and out, which helped in seeing the end of a 24ft trailer on some of these roads in Alaska

I think that some folks don't want "Ford Mirrors" or think that the Dodge 3rd Gens look better. I like the looks of the 3rd gen mirrors better than my CIPAs but the CIPAs are much cheaper to buy than 2 sets of Dodge mirrors (if you dont have the proper bases already you need to buy 2 sets of mirrors).

these are the stock style that is discussed in the thread linked in Cap-n-cray's post. The issue is that for the 3rd gen trucks, you have the option of manual or power in this style. For those of us with the 2nd gen trucks, the only factory option is the mirror in your ebay link. I had factory power, but non flip out on my truck. I wanted the towing flip out mirrors and still keep power mirrors so I did the swap.



To answer Paveman's question as to why people are wanting this style of mirror, for me I like when the mirror is flipped out in tow mode. It is taller rather than wider and allows me to see the tires on my trailer while still having enough mirror area so I can see traffic behind me. I drove transit school busses for years and they always have tall mirrors rather than wide mirrors and it boils down to preference. Another benefit is that from the outside, you can't tell my 95 from a 2002 truck with the factory mirrors. Also, I didn't like the elephant ear style of some of the aftermarket mirrors.

I got the same CIPA's, with the same results.

Ditto on the CIPA's. Heated and electric. They barely extend out enough to give adjustment so I can see around my 8. 5ft wide travel trailer. But they get the job done. The larger mirror surface is 'vunderbar'!



I wish someone would have come up with a way to adapt the Ford style mirrors with the large convex mirror across the bottom...
