this is the second turbo in a month that this has done this too. any ideas why? i dont have the wg hooked up but was never ran much over 35psi. once in a while it seen over that (gauge only goes to 30-35psi).

has anyone ever had oil feed line troubles? it snapped right in the middle, and now i have pieces in my intercooler this time, any suggestions on how to get em out?

Hey Matt

That doesn't soung good at all.

Does your gauge have a pin that stops the needle maybe more boost than you think

Just a thought.

it has went past the gauge a few times but not very often. between this transmission thing and this turbo i might just have a parts truck on my hand

Have you been carefull about not "barking" it. I know when I'm putting the hammer down I gotta be carefull when shifting not to bark it. Just a shot in the dark here.

this is the second turbo in a month... ... ... . it has went past the gauge a few times

Doh!... . Go figure. :-laf

Someone I know, who will remain nameless, did an oil analysis on his rig. Copper way too high. EZ box and he didn't change the elbow from stock when he installed. Recounted that on one trip pulling a very heavy gooseneck flatbed he pegged the gauge on an uphill pull. Almost certain the Cu is from the turbo bearings (other signs also evident).

Now he has a new 05 and I would be careful about what used rigs I bought at Dave Smiths. Personally, I would have taken the opportunity to explain to the wife why I need a new aftermarket turbo. :)

it never really barked and i hardly ran it over 28psi because it always had a bad auto. now that im in the swing of getting a transmission that holds in there it did pin the gauge a few times and i just added 3k springs. guess i will get this new turbo and get a hybrid kit and a bigger housing for it to see if that helps. im going to be putting in a 100 plate and a set of 215 injectors. any ideas to what the hp would be? i was guessing about 275 rwhp. with the 3k's.

...

Mjoppie: With your current, as in my old 95' . . almost same set up for power, i was snapping 50 psi pretty frequently on the old 35, be careful and get you a better gauge ;)

ok, i just got a brand new turbo (thanks again blue beast) and i am putting it on tomarrow. i am keeping the wg hooked up this time and will be getting a hybrid kit (58mm compressor and 16 or 14 housing) and some bigger injectors. i haver some 215's right now but am lookng at some 370's with the hybrid kit. if this turbo goes there will be a 98 12v 5spd for sale soon!! i will try a boost elbow and a new gauge and see what that does.

Just a shot here but,... you did not have the wastegate hooked up before? There in lies your problem more then likely. A boost elbow will probably let you see more boost then before, everything being equal. ( Fueling, timing, WASTEGATE settings, etc. ) Anyone else?

i just timed the truck to 15. 5* and will be putting in some 215 injectors for now with the 100 plate and 3k kit. i will gate the turbo to about 35psi and see how that runs. i kinda figured my timing was low but it was at 12*. hope to see a increase in economy with all the above mods. truck is at 240,000 miles. i think i put myself in this spot, about 3mths ago there was a thread about how long a stock turbo lived and i got all gloryful and gloated about 240,000 miles on my stock one, then disaster strikes :{ , oh well, maybe its for the best, happening when im layed off instead of during the summer on the side of the hiway.

Can someone explain what "barking" a turbo is?

Thanks!

When your making lots of boost (foots in it hard) and you suddenly let off on the peddle (say to shift) push in the clutch and the RPMs drop. The drive pressure drops on the exhaust side of the turbo (no more fuel) but there's still pressure in the intake (cooler, hoses, manifold... ) with nowhere to go. The pressure in the intake is forced back out through the compressor side and in turn stops the turbo and momentarily spins it backwards. Then the turbo stops again and starts spinning forward again. Not good and puts excessive stress on the shaft.

Hope that helps.

Mike

Make sure you prime the new turbo (squirt oil in the oil inlet while spinning the compressor by hand). I replaced the turbo on a Case backhoe at work and I forgot to prime the new unit with oil. Needless to say it didn't last long. I got the second one a week later and primed it, three years later and it's still going strong.

If you did prime the first one, forgive me for stating the obvious.

I have seen something similar happen before. The truck went through 2 turbos in 1400 miles and it ended up being glycol in the engine oil from a cracked head.
