You guys need to post pics. . I f i can find my pics i will too When I swapped mine in I turned it up side down so the access to the boots was much easier to work on. . I still have that setup in my old parts truck I plan to swap that into my '92 soon. . working on th edumping flatbed now. .

A good medium/heavy duty junkyard will have all the elbows, boots and clamps you'd ever need for a fraction of what Cummins whats for them.

I assume you don't have a/c, because it mount to the CAC and putting it in upside down would cause problems hooking up the a/c line.

What are real life EGT temps like with the 2nd gen cooler installed? How much difference did you see? When I talk to the local speed shop they tell me the 1st gen cooler will take 300 hp ,but when I talk to the cooler people ( Duralite ) they say it's marginal at best. Their engineering dept asked me all kinds of technical questions and want to built me an even thicker one that the stock 2nd gen one. I'm not sure how I would fit it in, especially with a/c. What did you use for a grille? ( my memory is going:-laf some of the might have been answered already ) Shadrach

... On my buddies 1st gen ( with a 2nd eng ) we modified the cac ends to 3" and used 3" tubing all around. Shadrach

Update: On my buddy's truck he has a 96 CTD in his 93 Dodge with a #10 plate, 3k gov spring, a big open aircleaner, and a 16 cm exh housing with 4" exh. His truck weighs about 15k lbs ( it's a service truck with a 10' box ) He has to watch his EGT's as they can climb fast. One problem he has is that he has a "Big" winch mounted in front of the rad blocking air flow. His water temps also run high. The solution we are going to use is to have a 4 core rad built ( it's waiting in his shop to be installed ) He can control the EGTs to a certain extent with his right foot. He has had to change his driving habits. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. :-laf

I don't want to have heating or cooling problems with my unit. Sharach

No a/c in eithe rof my first gens. . I'd like it. . my '89 has the second gen intercooer done. . the 92 still has th e stocker. . the 89 grille was shaved down and has clearance.

i was at cummins today

outside they have pallets of cores (cyl heads mostly)

asked one of the mechanics about a head i saw, one where i really liked the design

he said it was a 'C' motor

man, you could make some power with one of those heads...

Shadrach- I have AC, and put the condensor between the IC and core support. I may have to move it, and move the IC rearward, as my AC isnt just great, but I could have other issues, too (the heat dissipation from the IC may be affecting the ability of the condensor to dissipate heat, as it is usually in front). It is TIGHT with the unmodified stock grille, esp on the outer edges of the IC. I'm thinking if I move the IC back against the core support, I would have room for the condensor in front of it, as the grille "bows" out, lending itself to more room in the center for the condensor.

Keep in mind the people at Duralite are wanting to sell you an intercooler. What kind of EGT are you seeing now? I dont think 300hp with the stock intercooler is an unreasonable expectation.

Real world experience is kinda hard to judge, as I'd had my timing in the 2. 0 range at the time of the IC swap. At the time, it dropped my EGT 250-300deg across the board. WIth a 7500# truck, and a billboard for a headache rack, I ran 10deg EGT per MPH. Boost didnt increase, but seat-of-the-pants fell gave me some more bottom end. Now that my timing is at stock (good starting point, as I DID get 22+ MPG with stock timing and worn out injectors on the way home), I am running a little hotter- maybe 775 at 70mph on the flat. Cooldown time is still almost non-existant- by the time I get into my parking spot in the driveway (idle down the lane about 150ft), I am at 250-275.

For those who are wanting to do a fake intercooler mock up before they order a real one, what is the dimentions of the 2nd gen intercoolers?

Also, are they exactly square as the 1st gens, or are they tapered on the sides?

Even better, any pics?

Thanks!

Robert
