I have noticed a strange ticking noise only when I had below a 1/4 of a tank and suspected the noise was coming from the lift pump. I went into the dealer and they put a gauge on it and it read a whopping 2 PSI at idle and went down at higher RPMS. I had the pump replaced at 60K and now I'm at 79K. I know that crappy little pump is going to trash my injector pump at this rate, probably just out of warranty. Any sugestions would be greatly apreciated. BTW, what is the proper readings for fuel pressure.

This topic has been discussed over and over. In my opinion, 2psi is WAY to low. I just had my lift pump replaced a little while ago and upgraded the lines to get rid of the banjo bolts. Now I see 13-14 at idle, 12-13 cruising at 75, and 11-12 at full throttle. My last lift pump dropped into the range you are talking, then died completely less than 500 miles later. I believe somebody said that anything less than 5psi at idle would be replaced by Dodge. When the dealer saw the 2psi and saw it would go lower, didn't they feel it should be replaced?

Welcome to the "I've replaced my lift pump MULTIPLE times  " club. I've gone through 4 myself, I researched a solution for a long time and ended up going with a pusher pump installed back at the tank to help feed my stock lift pump. You can see info about it at https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19767 . It was a quick, easy, inexpensive (IMO) upgrade. There are also a number of other guys out there trying many other aftermarket setups (Mallory, Holley, Summitt, BG). Most of those have had a failure of one kind or another thus far (I don't think all of them have though, not sure). Chime in with some of the other options guys.

The dealer will replace the pump the first of next week when they get one. They told me they can not stock one and use it under warranty. ALL warranty pumps MUST be sent from someone at the DC tech. line. They had a pump to be used on out of warranty trucks. The pump will be in on Tue or Wed. He told me parts and labor is about $400. 00 for an out of warranty replacement!!!! Thats a lot of $$$$ for a POS that won't last. I will let them replace them as long as DC catches the bill, after that I'll be looking for a better solution.

A new lift pump at Cummins is about $130. I don't know what their labor would be on it, but I'd recommend that you replace it yourself and save the money, as well as learn something about your truck. Doing the pump replacement at a TDR Chapter BOMB session is a great way to do it.

Doc... ...

That $130. 00 sounds WAY HIGH!!.

I got mine from Cummins MidWest for 75. 00!!!

If you get "Friendly" with the parts man... he can go as low as 65. 00.

15 Minutes MAX to install!!

The "Re Prime" of the fuel system took longer than the install!!!

If the dealer is getting 400. 00... we ought to "March On Crysler H. Q. "

DO 5 star dealers get a mask and a gun when the qualify for the "Honor" of being 5 star???

Geeeeeesssssss... ...

I would definatley do it yourself if they wont cover it. As you have heard, its not expensive for the pump and installation is not hard.

Hey, I wonder if they've dropped the price on it. They should, since they sell so many. I'm going on year old information on the Cummins parts. That's what I paid when I picked up a pump for SteveSt back then.

Doc

They also revised the part... (Yet Again)... .

Do a quick search... I posted ... "Lift Pump A Performance Item". . a while back. .

Had the newest revised part number...

Made my ram run STRONG LIKE BULL!!!!

Warranty work

When doing warranty work, the parts are listed at cost. That $400 is the "cost" price for pump and then the labor.

Your current pump should be under the warranty on the part itself. Does Chrysler have the year parts and labor disclaimer for its parts? AC Delco does. Always make sure you know whose parts you are getting and their warranty.

Larry,

Where is your Cummins dealer? Phone number? I bought my lift pump from Cummins for $150 (Dodge was around $450 I believe).

Cummins Midwest

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

I don't have the phone number handy... the Cummins site should have it.
