2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission 2wd to a 4wd

Hey Guys, I was just wondering if any one has changed a 2wd into a 4wd and if so how hard is it to do and what all would I need to do the job and how much should I expect to spend, I have a 97 3500 2wd. I would just trade for a 4wd but I cant find exactly what I want for the price I want to pay, and I already have way too much time and money invested in this one. Thanks in advance for any help, hints, etc.

This has been discussed a few times before, seems like the consensus was you'd be better off buying a 4wd.

Is that all that I get, surley someone has done this or has a list of parts I would need

The frame is different. It would probably be easier to build spring mounts for leaf springs and use an earlier axle. Or a f*rd 1 ton axle so you could have locking hubs. You can get the transfer case and transmission and make the proper mounts.

You know I have thought about this also. I am headed to he mountains tomorrow and it has been raining here the last couple of days... I sure would like to have the 4 X 4 option if I needed it.

Is there that much of a differnce in the trucks to make it so much of a problem to make the change?????
