3/4 ton shortbed

i have an o1 truck im looking at getting an 05 can you pull a 5th wheel camper with the new shortbed trucks the camper is a 30' wildcat high profile

with a slider hitch it is close on my truck and my bed is longer than the 05

Yes, the Wildcats come with the pinbox extended pretty far forward. I have a sliding hitch but if I was buying one again I do not think I would bother.

Mine is 31. 6 ft 5er and my short box holds it with no problems... same with my father in-law

I'd sure think long and hard about why you wouldnt want a long box. It really doesnt feel that much longer than a short box when driving it - and you get much more room.

OK, I have to ask. If you're buying a new truck to pull a 5th wheel, why not look at the SRW 3500 at a minimum? The extra GVWR is not a bad thing to have, given that about 20% (typically) of the 5th wheel's weight is carried by the truck as pin weight.

Another vote for getting a 3500 SRW. An extra 900 lbs of capacity for a couple of hundred $$ is a good deal in my book. Also, consider the LWB. As mentioned, driving it is very little different from a SWB. Parking the LWB is the biggest issue, but mine fits in my garrage with no problem, and I just park a bit farther out at the shopping centers. Lord knows I need the exercize.

Me too. I'm glad I got my DRW also.



But, it is my daily ride (approx 25-30,000 miles/year) and no, it isn't a pain. I drive it to the bank, the mall, the grocery store, to church (not as often as I should, but that's another story :-laf ), to soccer games, etc.



Once you learn to make minor adjustments, you'll be fine. Even my wife prefers the dually over her minivan. I take it in to parking garages, drive thru's, and yes, I can parallel park it. Though it does stick out a little into the street!



But, it'll never fit into my garage! Not with all the junk I have in there.



It was a hard fought decision. I really was in the market for a SRW 1 ton, but looking at load carrying and fifth wheel hauling we determined that the right truck for the job was a dually. We didn't feel we wanted to be "pushing the envelope" (I don't have the "right stuff" when it comes to hauling I guess), so we went to the dually. I'd buy another again in a heartbeat.



As for the SWB/LWB, that's personal preference (and garage space for some), but for the cost differential between a SWB and LWB, you'll spend that and more on a slider hitch (that some say you won't need - until you hit the corner of your cab!).



Do what's right for you! This is the TDR - you'll get LOTS of opinions. Make an informed decision.

great info the dealer is looking for a drw after deciding to go with a long bed it was an easy choice to get the dually especially after driving one

Look at the #'s the DRW has a higher GVW but the SRW 3500 has a 3000# higher GCWR...



Since your trailer is only 30' The onboard weight (pin weight) will not be that high. The GCVWR is what you need to look at. The SRW is 23,000 GCVWR

Source? I'm certainly not a 3rd gen expert, but the highest GCWR available on a 2nd gen truck is the combo I ordered - 3500 dually with HO/6-speed and 4. 10 axle. The GCWR on this combo was 21,500 lbs, 1500 lbs higher than a dually with the 3. 54 axle or any 2500.

the other problem is that with a shortbed, you have to watch to make sure you dont let the back of the cab hit the front of the trailer, especially if it is a wide profile like you stated. My neighbor just bought an '05 3500 4x4 srw, and told me that the shortbeds ride entirely different than the longbeds. . Honestly, it's only a foot and a half longer, and I think that honestly it is mind over matter. I could never drive anything but a long box... I respect others opinions, but in your situation, it seems as if a long bed would better suit you. good luck with pulling your 5'er!

dealer finally found a truck i am supposed to pick it up tomorrow still sick about having to trade though i have a good truck and i will miss the 20 mpg i get empty never lease a truck if you intend to keep it after the lease is up

You will not miss your old truck when pulling your 5er with a new daully in gusty crosswinds... I had an awesome second gen, would would not go back. You will love driving a dually!
